string making question?????
« on: February 05, 2009, 09:37:00 AM »
So I watched "Doing the Twist" a while back and have been making a few stringsfor myself.

I built a string board. My question is when I start my first loop 6" from the end of the strands, complete it, then measure to start the 2nd loop, I end up with more than 6" of material for the 2nd one. How far down do you start twisting? Should I move to like 8" or so??

Thanks for any help.

Seven to eight inches is more common. Depending on what I want at the time I use 7 1/2" to 8" myself.

have you considered a timber hitch on the bottom.
i use one and i find it a lot easier and quicker to make strings with one loop

timber hitch holds well with b-50,i've heard FF slips, but never used anything besides b-50. i just make a top loop like normal and twist up the bottom 8-10" or so but dont for a loop just knot it off at the end and tie a timber hitch. has worked well for me over the years and can be adjusted as needed without twisting the string.

Well I just made one up starting 8" from the ends. It worked perfectly.

Kev, I was using D97 so I didn't try the timber hitch on this one. I'll give it a try later on a dacron string.

Thanks again,

Allen

I use 7 1/2 for the small loop and 8 1/2 for the large one.
