Bow Wood Choices?
« on: February 07, 2009, 05:00:00 PM »
What about these bow woods. Osage,Cocobolo,Eastern Red Cedar, red elm
These are my choice on a new t/d recurve..
I like the osage and coco combo. but like the idea of the red cedar?
How would this combo make as far as shooting, smooth drawing, forgiveness, Or will that depend on how the bows made/bowyer?
Any Pics

Depends on how the limbs are built.  Many builders use a veneer over stock maple or bamboo wood cores; a few use the actual wood.  My understanding is that what wood is used has very little to do with speed and nothing to do either how smooth or forgiving a bow is.  That said, elm and bamboo are generally thought of as adding a little more speed to a bow; but only in the range of 3 fps or so.
I'd be mostly concerned with how the bow is designed (bowyer) and how it looks.  Most bowyers will steer you straight on limb wood selection.

Best bet is to ask the bowyer what he recommends for limb woods.  He may use actionwood, bamboo, maple, etc... and a veneer on top.  If that is the case why not combine all three woods.  Cocobolo riser with osage accents and red cedar veneers.  I think it would look great...Mike
