cross eye dominant
« on: March 13, 2007, 02:42:00 PM »
Hi Gang, I have a question for you all.
I recently got my Dad back into Trad. shooting and we found out he is left eye dominet, he's shooting a right handed bow, and all his arrows seem to be hitting just left of what he's aiming at. Is there a cure other than switching to a left handed bow ??  Thanks FB

If he is actually "aiming", then the only real fix is switching lefty. If he shoots truly instinctively then the mental computer will adjust and compensate. I am right eye dominant and shoot right, but with some of the sunglasses I wear my right eye can't even see the the target. It doesn't affect my shooting at all. I've tested this by shooting with left eye open, right open, or both open. With my style of instinctive shooting, it makes no difference in where I shoot, or how accurate.

I have been having the same problem...the reason is I need a weaker spined arrow but that is me...I keep both eyes open and so I get a side wiew of the arrow at full draw because my sight picture is through my left eye....now if he does it that way then you might try a weaker spined arrow

Thanks for the input guys! He's shooting instinctively, might have to try a weeker spine for him. Adding wieght to the tip will take you'r spine down right ?

formerbutcher:  I don't think it's an arrow  spine issue.  When I was shooting his bow and arrows, they were grouping just fine for me and right on target.

Shooting more will help him but he needs a backyard target so he can shoot more.  The little he gets out with us isn't making an impact to his hair covered computer.  He needs to shoot way more arrows than what he's shooting with us.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.  Semper Fi - Tom

Yeah, I agree with Tom. I'm left eye dominant but because it's damaged, I shoot right handed. I also shoot instinctive after years of shooting target with sights. I just went out and practiced. Eventually the brain adjusts your 'sights' so that you end up hitting what you are looking at. Just make sure all the other factors like body form and equipment set up is right and it will work.

Many shooters are cross eye dominant. Just keep shooting. It will all come together.

Have your dad move his anchor point to the left a little and turn his head slightly to the right to put his left eye directly over the arrow---works for me.

Would it be the way he's holding the bow? Right hand shooters who shoot left I found mey be toquing the bow.
Anyway, I never really got the thing about left eye/right eye dominant for traditional instinctive shooters. Unless there is a big difference from left and right. Isn't this really a rifle, recurve bow with sight and compound thingy that seemed to carry over to tarditional?
