McKenzie ShotBlocker Target?
« on: February 11, 2009, 08:41:00 PM »
I am in the market for a new target that will work with broadheads and fieldpoints.  Has anybody tried the McKenzie ShotBlocker target?  If so, what are the pros and cons.  Thanks for your time.

Not familiar with that target, but this is my two cents:

For a target to hold up to repeated broadhead use, it needs to use heavy dense foam like found in the old technology dense foam Mckenzie 3D targets. This foam reseals extremely well and holds up to much abuse. The only draw back is arrow removal. A good broadhead will slice the foam giving enough relief on the shaft to remove the arrow. But, if you shoot the foam with a field tip, the foam will reseal around the shaft and you can be very difficult to remove.

The new layered and soft foam technology makes arrow removal a breeze. Field points tend to ride between the layers making for long target life. But, a good broadhead will slice and shred these targets into a pile of scrap in short order.

I've never found a good target for broadheads that worked well with field tips when shooting heavy arrows. And, I tend to completely avoid any layered target when shooting broadheads.

Shot mine to pieces in about 3 months with a 45# bear and magnus heads. Recently bought a Morrell 6 shooter and am having much better results.

I just ordered one from Wally World's website.  You gotta love the ship to store option.  Just something to fling the occasional broadhead at.

If you want a target to shoot field points at the Mckenzie is awsome.  It will hold up for a long time and it is easy to pull your arrows.  I have not shot broadheads at one but like most targets I don't see it holding up to well.  However Rhineheart makes a target called the 18 in 1.  They guarentee that if you shoot up all 18 sides in 1 year they will replace it free.  It don't matter if you use field points, broadheads, or expandables.

I haven't tried that one, but I did buy and currently use a Rinehart 18-1 and am very pleased with it so far.  I like it alot better than the block I had.  It was a messy target.

I have one, but only use it for field points. I would never buy a layered target for broadheads.

Check out Morrell's Yellow Jacket or American Whitetail Targets King Series.

I purchased the Rhinehart 18-1 target from a local archery pro shop. I preseated to pumell it practically every day. I shot snuffers, razor caps, magnus 4-blades,etc.into this target. I shoot alot, probably more than anyone else I know. It took me 9months to shoot this target to yhe point where it would not stop an arrow. Took it back to the shop I bought it at and they gave me a new one,no questions asked! Best broadhead target I have ever had. Field points are easy to remove, and I think that if you only shot field points into it,you would never wear it out. They will only honor the 1yr. warranty once to original owner.
