28 1/2" arrow?
« on: March 13, 2007, 11:22:00 PM »
I've searched and read this forum for this but can't find an answer.  I shoot 28 1/2" 2018s now but want to switch to carbon, specifically axis or mfx.  I shoot a Mentor that is 57@28.  I want to keep a 28 1/2" arrow length.  I want to use 100 grain inserts and 150 grain points.
Which shaft should i get?  400's or 500's?  I don't have a cutoff saw.  Just want to adjust spine with tip weight.
Anyone shoot 28 1/2" carbons out of a bow similar to mine?
Thanks in advance.

I shoot Carbon Express shafts (45-60) at that length with the same weight recurve. I need a 100 grain insert and 200 grain point. I have tried and can't get the Axis shafts to fly worth a lick. Lot's of people love them so it must be me.  :banghead:

Well you pretty much have to split the difference. The 2018 at 29" has a spine if .464. The 500 is .500 and the 400 is .400 at 29"

You could go with the 400 and either leave them longer than your 2018 or go with the 500 and use less weight up front.

The above assumes static spine means everything and dynamic nothing...which is not true. What I'm really saying is neither is a direct replacement but both could work if you make some changes and are willing to play a little.

Thanks for the replies.  Pretty much what I was thinking, smack dap between the two spines.  Think I'll try the 400s.  I've also got 65# limbs so I might be able to keep the same shaft, and just change point weight.  Who knows.

You'll be able to shoot a shorter arrow with the 500's right?

I should be able to but if I go with the 400s I'm thinking if their overspined with the 57# limbs, I'll use the 65lbers.
Atleast that's the idea.

One of my bows is a Partner 57# @ 28 drawn exactly 28.  It bareshaft tunes with a 28 1/2" Heritage 250 w/ standard CX insert and a 180grain broadhed/screw-on-glue-on.  The same bow shoots  and bareshaft tunes 29/12" mfx classic 400s (which aren't good stump shooting shafts unless you foot them wit aluminum by the way) with a standard insert and a 125.  I think the skinnier shaft makes them shoot "softer" since they sit closer to centershot.  For what it's worth, the mfx shafts don't shoot or tune well for me with big broadheads.  The Heritages are first rate.

I am with Beachbowhunter on Carbon Express arrows. I shoot 28 1/2 in. out of my Wallace long bow. My draw weight is 55lbs. My arrows weight in at 505grains. I found the rebar stake on one of our clubs 3-d targets last sunday. All that happened to arrow was I bent the field tip and insert and lossen the nock adapater. New insert and tip and it is ready to shoot. Wood or alum. would have been done for. Just ordered another doz. for hunting this fall.

Thanks for all the replies.  I'll look into the Carbon Express shafts as well.
