Wood arrows for my Shrew
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:26:00 PM »
I recently got my new Shrew classic hunter 54 in , 48 lbs @ 28 in. and Im wanting to try wood arrows . Ive never shot a wood arrow other than a couple a friend gave me to try out on a old bow I had so I know nothing at all about them . Im wanting a arrow with good weight , cut to 29 in. and use 145 grain points . I draw a good 28 in. so I pull a good 48 lbs , I shoot 3 under if that makes a diffrence and my shrew does have Rons string on it . I really need to nail this one on the head the first shot because Im low on funds for a good LONG while so any help on arrow sugestions would be apreciated .

Thanks for your time ,
Mike Britt

I'm thinking 55/60 should work, but some may say 60/65's cut to 29 if your going with a mid-heavy tip.
Just one more step please!

ron suggested to me, to go up in spine 15#s for my shrew, because they shoot so hard.
So a 60-65# or 65-70# should work with a 125grn point.

Is it better to be a little underspined or a little overspined with wood arrows ?

Brittman -- I have two CH's at 54", one 53# and the other 55# at 28". Both shoot 70-75 cut to 29" and 165-grn heads. So I'm thinking 60-65 or 65-70. Do you have a trad archery shop nearby? Or a friend who shoots woodies so you can try one? Are you buying shafts to make up your own, or buying finished? In either event, I guess if I had to guess at it, I'd go with 60-65 left full length (usually 32" to 34" so if they fly too weak you can gradually cut them back to tune. Or if they show too strong, doubtful, you can go to 160grn heads, which are better for hunting anyhow. Good luck, dave

Mike,
Did you order your Shrew,or did you pick it up at Kalamazoo?? I shot a 54" 48@28" Classic Hunter with Tamo Ash veneers at Kalamazoo that was a real sweetheart!!! Just wondering if that was the bow you have.

Im going to buy some to try first and then maybe down the road save up some money to get the materials to start making arrows . No trad archery shops are local and I do have a few tradgang friends not far away but they shoot diffrent # than me so I dont think they would shoot the same arrow spine as I would .

Jwilliam that is the bow . It was close to the one I had on order so I took it in place of the one I had on order . How did you like the Ivory tip overlays ?

For that bow you would be best at 60-65 woodies.  My arrows are set up identical to how you desribe setting yours up but I am shooting them out of 53-54 pounds bows and my arrows are spined between 65-70 pounds.

I believe with that point weight and that arrow length you would do best with 65-70# spine. I have owned several and one that was the same specs. and it bareshafted a tad weak with the same arrow set-up, which is what ya want. A tad weak bareshaft! Shawn

Mike, the Tapered arrows on my web site are made by Paul Jalon and he spines them closer than 5#. Because of the 450+ string the Shrew bows prefer a stiff shaft. I was thinking 65-67# spine for you at the 29" length.     :readit:   I talked to Paul and he agreed.

Brittman, go with what Ron says.  I had you figured like Shawn, 65-70.  IMO you are better overspined than underspined.  Start with the arrows an inch or so long and shorten them as you tune until they are flying right.  If you start underspined, you are pretty much SOL.

Brittman, if you can afford it go with one of the choices on Ron's site.  Ron and Paul will provide you with a arrow that will fly straight and true from your Shrew!

That was cheesy!

Britt...if you want to make real sure you can get the test kit from 3riversarchery. It's $35+shipping for a 6 pack consisting of 2 each of 3 different spined arrows. That way you can shoot each set and find out exactly which one will work for ya.

If you want to spend money on a test kit, make sure the arrows in the kit are "hand spined and weighed". If they're not you're wasting your money. Wood shafts that come in bulk from the factory are not hand spined..they're electronically spined by machine and they are not weighed at all.

A good arrow maker will take the bulk shafts and hand spine them on the edge grain and usually group them in 5# increments. In some cases machine spined arrows can vary as much as 20#. When Paul hand spines shafts he groups them within 2 to 3 #..... Then they should be grain weighed within 10 grains. Then they need to be checked for straitness and straightened. All this before you even start to make the arrow.

A good arrowsmith also needs to know the type of bow you are shooting, longbow, recurve, selfbow, the kind of string is important, dacron, fastflight ect. The bow weight of coarse but also the individuals draw length to determine the weight they are getting out of their bow. Then he needs to know if the bow is cut out from center, center or past center. A bow cut center or past center is going to need a stiffer arrow because it has less paradox coming out of the bow.

Lastly, when you give an arrowsmith your draw length, don't give an estimate. I tell people the way to check their draw length is to put a clamp on clothes pin horizontally behind the head of the arrow and draw your bow. If the clothes pin doesn't touch the back of the bow, move it in until it does. Then measure from the bottom of the slot in the nock to the pin and that's your draw length. Rule of thumb is to add one inch to that to allow for broadhead clearance. If a good arrowsmith has the correct information then he can formulate the correct arrow for the individual and guarantee they will fly.

Britt,

I'd go with what Ron and Paul say on this one. Like Ron said, check your draw length exactly.

I have 3 sets of arrows from Paul and Ron and they are always spot on when given all the correct information like Ron laid out above.

I agree with Ron....wood arrow test kits are worthless unless hand spined and weighed.  Also, it's the low-stretch strings and centershot capability that causes bows to require stiffer shafts than many of the older designs.  A modern bow, doesn't apply any more force at 60# than an older one does at 60#, the difference is in the string, more often than not.
