FOC arrows / Ashby reports
« on: February 14, 2009, 11:37:00 PM »
Does anyone know of an alternative to aluminum inserts for 2020 aluminum arrows? I'm using broadhead adapters and want something tougher than the typical aluminum insert.

I've been trying to set up some heavy FOC arrows and would like to address the last weak point, my aluminum inserts.  Brass or steel would be great but the only brass ones I know of on the market are for carbon.

Thanks
Tom

A 2020 by itself is a heavy arrow at 13.5 grains per inch. It's not like a carbon arrow where you can load up the point weight to get a higher percentage of FOC. Carbon arrows are much stiffer. That is why there aren't as many spine differences with carbons than they are with the many spines of aluminums. If you load up the point weight with a 2020, you will probably end up going to a stiffer spined arrow, but it might not increase the FOC that much.

I haven't seen anything for 2020's other the aluminum or a carbon inserts for them. You can get a Kustom King or 3Rivers PDP adjustable converta point inserts that accept add-on weights behind the insert like carbons accept to increase FOC.But these days everything leans toward carbons and accessories for them, aluminums there is just not a big enough market for anything more then whats available for them now.Who knows in 5 or 10 years aluminum arrows may be antiques even though alot of us still like and use them.

I gotta ask...

What are you shooting at that you're worried about the alum. insert? What do you think is going to happen to it?

I can machine my own if I wanted more weight, but to me it's not neccessary.  2020 is a heavy shaft to start with. And the standard aluminum insert is more then adequate!
