Flemish string builders question
« on: February 16, 2009, 10:37:00 PM »
Does it matter how you twist and braid a flemish string. On the DVD  Doing the Twist, they say to twist clockwise (away from you)and braid counter-clockwise (toward yourself) but on a few "how to" sites that I have read,  the say the opposite, twist counter-clockwise and braid clockwise. Does it matter as long as you do both loops the same.

Thanks for the help guys...  Al

As long as you do it one way or the other on both ends it is fine.  I personally do it he same way as on Doing the Twist.  Practice.

Doesn't make any difference, but righties or lefties might find one or the other a little easier to do.

Little strands I twist away from me.  Bigger strands I twist towards me.  Easiest way I can remember it.

I have gotten strings on some bows that were twisted toward then away, but I would find it awkward. I do it the same as Doing the Twist. I was taught how by my cousin. I have made a lot of strings that way with no complaints so far.

I was taught and use the clockwise-counter-clockwise method (the same one in "Doin' the Twist").  I would imagine it doesn't matter as long as both ends are the same.

It doesn't matter as long as you twist one way and rotate the other. It locks the fibers together. If you do them both the same way they will start to untwist when you brace the bow. It's a real sick feeling   :banghead:
