Turkey calls
« on: February 18, 2009, 10:05:00 AM »
Anyone care to recommend their favorite turkey call? I've used box calls in the past b/c they were relatively easy to use and effective, but I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks.

pick a style, and learn to use it well.... Most guys I know carry all different types, and will try each at different times.  You just got to find that gal 'Ole Tom is searching for.....

I really like this series. You can make any hen sound possible with these, and you can get really loud with these.

   Sonic Dome Series

Also for locator calls I love the owl hoot. I use my mouth a lot but I also have the shock'n owl call. When you first take it out of the package and blow it sounds like a bad duck call but the trick is to blow hard and don't put your lips over the opening. Once you play around with it you can get it sounding really good.
   owl call

I always have four different mouth calls with me ranging from high pitched to real raspy, just got to find what that gobbler likes. I like mouth calls because of practicality, less movement cause I dont hunt out of blinds.

I do as Bob said and carry a bunch of different ones.  My favorite is my slate call.  Mostly because it is what I use the best but it makes it hard to call and get ready for a shot at the same time.

I also like pot calls and use Bud and Betty's calls. I carry a slate (my favorite) and glass call every day and add a crystal call on windy days. Check out the "BIG OL UGLY YELP'N STICK", instead of changing calls I will pull out the BIG UGLY to change it up.
Very functional and the instruction DVD is great.

I use mostly a custom box call but use a Sassy glass friction call and a slate as well.I carry a few different strikers for different tones and some strikers allow you to really get on it and be very loud when you want to be.

When locating on a windy day I use my loud calls. When trying to finish a bird off I like the slate because its forgiving to use and cant screw up as easy as the glass and its quieter for when they are close.

The Diaphram is great but I am not as good with it.It does leave both hands free which is an advantage and thier is no hand movement which is great.

I have killed more birds with the box.But thats because I have use it more and have mastered it pretty well.So its my favorite.

I like the friction call myself. With my all time favorite being the Primos power crystal! the easern birds really like it! With a crystal/slate/glass type call you can carry a variety of strikers to get different pitches. Strikers are easy to make out of dowell rods and old broom, ace, maul, handles or any other scrap wood laying around. For less than 20 bucks you could buy a power crystal and make a dozen strikers!

check out rut and strut game calls out of florida owned by tim sanford.  he has some of the best sounding mouth calls i have ever used.  he also makes his own pot/slate calls with different woods, surfaces, strikers and much more.  i used his calls last year and had very good luck with them.  you can get very good raspy yelps out of the mouth calls and the slates.  he custom make each one and can inlay pictures under glass on the pots as well.  he has a very wide variety to choose from and can build just about anything you will want.  check him out for the best turkey calls you will ever take into the woods.

Yaa I got lucky getting that box call Jason at a NWTF convention years ago.my lovely wife felt sorry for me and bought it after some sweet talk and downright begging. Its a solid wild Cherry wood base and cherry lid with Pennsylvania slate under the lid.Jasons got a real good sounding box made by primos. Not sure what model that was.Its nice though.Might have had the purple Heart lid?

Me and my turkey hunting friends all have calls made by Pete Peters in KY.We used to travel all over and hunt many states.anyway these are great calls with laminated oak pots and a few other trade secrets he does with the calls.I use the Sassy glass and my brother uses it and the slate and a friend uses the double glass Sassy glass. The strikers are laminated birch and oak with the flared fatter tip. These are fantastic calls really.

Fountain mentioned the Rut and Strut calls.I agree they are super calls and I have one of his slate calls my brother bought for me recently. My brother uses some of his other calls as well.We always hunted pressured public land and these calls have helped us kill a bunch of birds over the years I feel.A good custom call is worth the money IMO.

I love to turkey hunt.Got out high school 79' srarted turkery hunting in 1980.I'm sure there were others but as far as I could tell no one around here spring hunted turkeys.Every body I walked up to an asked would just look at you stupit and say I got turkey.Don't think I ever had one person turn me down. The first 15 years or so.These were farm ground turkey did'nt hit the mountains untill a few years later.Sorry I always get carryed away when I talk turkeys.Thers only 2 things worse thats deer and building selfbows.
Any way if you really want to be a turkey hunter you have to learn them all.Yea you can stick a call in your mouth or in your pocket and go out an kill a turkey.
And yes I did say kill.Sorry but you kill an animal you harvest fruit at least thats how we do it in West Virgie.
As for calls I like box calls for the distence but after that I loveee slate. My granddady taught me along time ago what could be done with a slate call.
The next thing except movement that spooks turkeys is loud calling which you can't do with a slate call.A lot of time your to far for them to hear.I won't even tell you how many gobblers I've called up useing them over the years.

Well my favorite, being the one I am most skilled with is  Slate Call. I like the Primos Freak and Crystal. I like carrying numerous box calls, and numerous mouth calls. Love the shock gobbler, easy and effective.
