The low country SC turkey season opened this AM and I was invited to hunt with a friend on his farm..a real friend as you will see. Well nothing gobbled so we set up in an area between a slough and field hoping some birds were roosted in the slough. I tried using only a jake decoy as some have suggested. My friend was hunting with his shotgun and I with my widow PL, we set up facing opposite directions since we hadn't really pinned down a bird. As it turned out a gobbler came from across the field...behind me...walked by my friend at less than 20 yds and walked right up behind me. I could hear him and knew he was there and close. He had to see the jake decoy, but he never went to it, finally he just walked off. I never even saw him...he stayed behind me. My friend could have shot him but thought he was coming to the decoy so let him pass. After it was over, he told me that the gobbler was so close behind me that I could have killed him with a tennis racket. Never the less....a fun day in the turkey woods...might have to re-think this decoy thing.
