Elk in Idaho
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:32:00 PM »
My son and i are thinking about a elk hunt in Idaho this year. We've both done lots of elk hunting in Or. and Wa but none in Idaho I thought some of you folks might have some suggestions as to what units would be good to try. Were not looking for big bull's, just a cow or two to chase around. any thought's?  thanks

unit 29 would be good in central Idaho. There is a lot of access and still good elk counts. You could encounter a lot of folks but if you get off the beaten trail you would most likely have a great time. You could ck on the Bowsite . It is a compound site but clk on Idaho and ask. They will hammer you about wolfs but there is plenty of country and someone may direct you some place closer to your part of the state. Good luck

I hunted the Dworshak Area in 2002, had a good hunt.  The terrain is tough and thick but access is pretty easy.  We saw a good amount of elk and took one bull out of there.  Saw bears everyday, and heard wolves howling on two different occasions.  Joe

i rarely if ever suggest areas to hunt, for various reasons..
but if you sniff around on the IDFG website you can learn plenty there, i think this link will take you right to the Elk harvest data.
 http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/hunt/elk/
and there is plenty of more good info if you spend an hour or so.
if you are sure you are going to hunt Idaho, then i would suggest putting in for a draw, if you don't draw well your set to go anyway..
regs can sometimes be a pain so if you have any questions feel free to hit me up.
good luck..
