Hot melt glue question
« on: March 15, 2007, 01:11:00 PM »
I have a three rivers glue pot and the glue they sell with/for it.  Am I the only one using this to install inserts in carbon arrows?? My experience with this has been pretty good, if you have done this also what has been your experience?

9 mile, I've always used hot melt glue on my inserts. Bad thing about hotmelt is sometimes it will turn loose when I'm pulling it out of a target. Good thing is if you break an arrow I can heat it up and get my insert back. I've never been able to get an insert out that has been epoxied in.

Some people use a hot melt glue for installing inserts in carbons, but it is not recommended.Carbon's are very tough but do not take excess heat very well.I used hot melt on a carbon once with good result, but on the second one I trashed a prefectly good carbonwood. After that I prefer to use powerbond or AAE two part insert epoxy. You might be able to get by with hot melt but be careful with the heat if you half to heat the shaft.Powerbond is heat reversable, just install a field point and heat that and pull the insert straight out without twisting it.

Ok good advice.  I don't heat the shaft at all.  The glue pot from 3rivers is just hot enough to smart if you grab the insert sitting in it (I use a pliers usually).  I let the insert heat up to the glue temp and then quick install it.  If I have to push it in further because it cools too fast I put a field point in and heat the point with a regular lighter.  The point transfers the heat to the insert and then can be pushed in or pulled out. I never heat the carbon except if I have over spill that I can’t get off.  If I have to heat it to clean overspill I use a quick flame shot just to get the glue hot enough to wipe clean. I have had very few points pull even when shot into plywood on a miss.  At times I have had to unscrew the field point because I can’t pull the arrow out or make the insert give.  I am asking because I am surprised how well it has been working and there are so many more experienced archers here that all use epoxy I am just waiting to see the glue backfire on me.
