Dye bow shooters - need your advise. Pictures!

I recently traded for a Dale Dye Take down recurve and the person I got it from told me he had been told it was FF compatible. He was not the original owner so he only knew what he had been told. The bow, however, has a dacron string on it and does not have any information written on the bow indicating it is FF. I looked at pictures of a Dye that is advertised in the classifieds as being FF and the limb tips look very similar to the limb tips of the one I have. On the area of the riser where all the information is, it reads the same thing as mine except for legenth and poundage. Neither bow has FF on the bow as best as I could tell, so how can I tell if the one I have is truly FF compatible?   :confused:

Louis, I don't own a Dye, but have been looking at them for some time.  Hopefully someone will be along to give you a better answer, but I have been told that if it is FF compatible it will have a layer of phenolic under the tip overlay.  I would like to know if there is a more reliable way to tell myself...Mike

I haven't see a Dye bow yet that was FF compatible. I'm pretty sure the limb tips are not built up to handle FF.

my understanding is that he will build bows for FF on request.  i believe he only began doing this a few years ago so if the bow was built before 2006 or so i'd say it wasn't FF.

i'd send some pic's to Dale Dye and see what he says. either way his bows are great, with or without FF.....  enjoy the bow

I don't know it's age nor did the fella I got it from. It has the yellow overlay then what looks like black phenolic and then the wood grain top overlay. Just like the one that is currently advertised in the classifieds as FF compatiable by bowhunterinchile. I know Dale will make FF bows if you request it. I just don't know how you identify it if you are not the original owner. Does Mr. Dye have an email address, because I don't think he has a web site.

does it have any serial #??  i know Dale sometimes puts the year the bow was made on the riser down near any inscriptions. if you can find out the original owners name maybe Dale has records of the bow he made for the guy.

if you have any doubts, i'd stick with the dacron

The one I had that was FF  had tips that sound just like yours.Yellow laminate and black phonolic or glass with wood on top.

My brothers non FF did not have the black laminate.

I have 05,06 and 07 models, and mine are all FF compatible. The best thing to do is call Dale and check with him. The phone number is 406-363-2983. Even with my bows being FF compatible I prefer the B-50 string, as on most bows it's much quieter. I just don't think the minimal speed gain and added wear and tear on your bow that you get with the FF is worth the added noise on most recurves.  With a Dacron string and 9 GPP my bows are as fast and as quiet as any recurves that I have owned.

Look down where Dale signed the bow. it should have a number above his signature like 06 or what ever. That is the year the bow was made. James' Dye has fiberglass tips, if yours has wood on it it is not FF. But to tell you the truth, I have owned Dyes that had antler tips and I shot 450+ on them with no ill effects, but that was my choice so you know how that goes, could blow up could hold up. Most of Dale's bows I have owned had a dark fiberglass or phenolic sandwitched between the lams from the tips down several inches so that reinforces the tips, but I cannot tell you if it is FF or not. Best bet is to contact Dale and send him pics. But I do not know if he uses computers or not. I know he does not have a web site.

I think Danny's right about that extra 6-7" section on the limb tips placed between the limb lams making it FF compatible.  My bow was order in 2006 and I had a discussion at that time as to which was quieter, FF or dacron.  Dale thought FF was quieter so I ordered it that way.  I have two sets of FF limbs; one has a section of red phenolic with anter tips over this, one has a yellow layer, then red, then Cocobolo over the red.  (I've shot both since I received it and the dacron is quieter by far...so each to his own) I have another Dye that I purchased privately that does not have this extra material between the lams that I've always assumed was dacron only.

I too, bought a Dale Dye a couple months ago on this site.  The person said it was FF.  I had my questions when it showed up.  The date on my dow was "02".  I called Dale and he said he did not start putting FF tips on bows until Jan 05.  So unless he had an extra set of limbs made, it would need a date later than that.  I looked at the pic of bowhunterinchili and it looked like he had an additional layer of material on the tips than mine.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate very much your response and information. Although I think the tips are designed for FF, I guess I will need to call him to find out for certain. Bowhunterinchile bought his directly from Mr. Dye and I believe my tips to be identical to his except for the color of the phenolic. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

I will post the side view photo here also.  I bought my bow directly from Dale (orders march of 2006, recieved Feb. of 2008).  I paid an extra 75 dollars for the FF option.  I have never handled a non-FF, so I have nothing to compare it against.  I have shot many different bows and I do not think the dacon can be much quieter then the FF, because it is silent with just some cat whiskers.  This bow is a shooter with the FF.  That is no a sales promotion either as the bow is already sold to Danny :-)

Here are pictures of my limb tips. They appear to be the same configuration as James'. I will still call Dale to check for certain, but looking at the pictures, I am 99% convinced they are FF compatible. James, thanks for everything.
