Wind & Feathers
« on: March 06, 2009, 11:04:00 AM »
I shoot 5" light helical feathers.  They fly great when it is calm. But when the wind blows around here, I have all kinds of trouble!  They will corkscrew, fly sideways, etc.  I'm looking for fletching ideas to fix this problem, or any other solutions.

Zander, you won't find any..Theres only 2 ways to combat the wind, actually only one..Speed...Arrows are going to drift at a rate vector of the wind speed and direction. The less time in flight, the less if drifts..The more stable an arrow is, the faster it will correct itself into the wind it "sees"....Bigger feathers do this at the expense of drag which slows it down at a faster rate..No net gain...Using a higher FOC with smaller fletching will both increase stability and decrease drag.

Odds are you can reduce your fletching size significantly but that's the only quick and easy improvement. More speed or at least not losing as much speed down range is the only solution to reduce it, you're not going to get rid of it........O.L.
