Ok everyone just humor me.  I've been shooting cx heritage shafts with a 100 grain brass insert and a 125 grain tip for quite a while now. They bare shaft great with my questionable skills.  They weigh just under 600 grains and I love that fact.  I've always thought heavier was better.
I went to the local pro shop yesterday to shoot the first week of techno league and I noticed the chronograph is working again.  It has been out of commision for a while now.  Last time I remember it working I was shooting near 180 fps fairly consistently with different arrows.  Now my 59# Widow is shooting around 160 and I can't get it out of my mind.
My arrows now have a FOC of 16% and around 10 gpi.  This is where I've always read I should be.
But as I said I'd like to be around 180 fps and get a little flatter trajectory.  But I don't want to go too light.  I hate a loud bow.
So I'm looking for new shafting.  The trad only shafts from 3 Rivers look good but there little feed back on them yet.  I thought they might be what I'm looking for.  I used to shoot 2117's out of my bow with great results.  They have a deflection of 400 same as these carbons.  I would like to wind up a 530 grain arrow with 10- 15% FOC a 5/16 diameter arrow without weight tubes, maybe a 50 grain brass insert and 125 grain head.  Am I asking too much?

Chronographs have done more to screw up good bow/arrow combinations than anything else.  Before you knew what your bow was shooting, you were satisfied, right?  For what it's worth, my advice is don't worry about fps.  Good luck.

I would check another crono, IMO at 10 gpp you should be around your 180. What is you draw lenght?

With that said i would all so go with Orion's advice.

10 gpp 600 grain arrow will more than likley blow through any animal out there

My draw is 28 1/2 inches.  I agree with you guys but its in my head and I can't get it out.
I work in a large outdoor retail chain in the bow dept.  I sell wheelie bows all day long.  I feel bad when someone says,"what does that bow IBO," and its advertized at 320 fps.  Then they shoot a 27" draw, a nice 400 grain arrow with some accessories to quiet the string and shoot it and its going 265.
I agree with you wtpops this set up will and does go through anything so far but I'd like a little flatter trajectory.

crandog if you shoot that set up regularly for a month and forget the chrono you will be unable to detect any trajectory, and be a happy killer-guaranteed!

Chrono's ought to be banned.
It's amazing how many people are as happy as a sandboy with their bow, until they run it through a chrono & realise that it's doing about 20-25fps less than they thought.
I made that mistake with a Roy Hall Navajo. Loved the bow to death, best bow I've ever owned, bar none. Ran it through a chrono & read one forty something, as opposed to the one eighty something I was hoping for. It played on my mind so much I ended up selling it & I've frankly regretted it ever since.

Chronos will disappoint you every time. If you are happy with your bow and set up keep away from the chrono. Speeds nice but in trad archery everything is a compromise.

First, I happen to agree with those who said forget the chronograph. If you were happy before, be happy now. As a side note; my suspicion is that the chrono is question is a little off the mark. A Black Widow at 10 gpp sould be in the 180's, not 160's. But, assuming you still want to change your arrow...

Going to 8-9 gpp doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a loud bow. There are a lot of ways to shoot a reasonable arrow weight, get good speed, and still be quiet.

The shafts in question are relabeled Beman ICS Classics. You can get them most anywhere online for about $60/dozen. Like all Beman ICS shafts, they're good quality.

You won't get 530 grains out of a Beman ICS Classic with a 50-grain insert and a 125-grain head. I have some full length Beman ICS Camo Hunters (same specs as the Classics, only camo instead of wood grain) in my bow rack that are full length with 25-grain inserts and 125-grain heads. They weigh in at 475 grains. Even with a 50-grain insert, you'll still only be at 500 grains, and then you've got to figure you'll lose about 9 grains for every inch you cut the shafts down from 32".

In the end, to ease your mind, I'd suggest shooting through a different chronograph before you make any changes. You may find that you're really a lot closer to 180 fps than you think.

As far as the chrony being off on the techno machines I think the crony is reading what the arrow is doing at the distance of the screen not right out of the bow.

Rod is right your speed is more like 10 or 15 fps faster because it is reading the speed at 15 -or 18 yards on the tecno.

I shot my favorite bow through a chrono many years ago. It was slower than what I expected and I never looked at that bow the same after that. I eventually sold it because it felt slow to me. Pretty dumb thing to do.

I learned my lesson. I save myself a lot of grief and stay away from chronographs.

Stop looking at the numbers. Curiosity killed the cat more than once. I've never had a dead animal laugh at my setup. Our ancestors were able to survive hunting with those incredibly slow bows they had, enough to ensure that we exist today. That right there should tell you something.
