Helical?

I am also wondering about helical for these guys---is it worth the extra effort? I mean, will this benefit in any way?

That's really going to depend on their set up.  Most of the Gadgeteers I know use straight fletch vanes and mechanical heads.  Back in the day when I shot compound, you'd be laughed off the course for shooting straight fletch.  Everybody knew a spinning arrow was more stable.  Times change I guess.

I can only pray that they start shooting a stick and string. I always have that little Wasp available for them to shoot when we go.

 I'm gonna try some helicals for these guys just to satisfy some curiosity.

Depending on the type of rest they may not be able to shoot anything past 3 degrees.

Ok, I just shot one that I built with truflight feathers off a fall-away rest, and it shoots great!

 I think I might be on to something.

DarkeGreen, I was thinking kinda the same thing there. I am going to go shoot with them this evening, I guess we shall see how they work for him.

I have always used straight fletch with a slight offset. Even a straight fletch with no offset will spin an arrow just because of the shape of the feathers. I shoot mostly self bows and found, for me, helical fletchings are noisier than straight fletch and they make my arrows slower.
   I would suggest trying straight, straight with a slight offset and helicals and see what works best for you, with target points and the broadhead you normally use. I'd bet you could find someone that would fletch an arrow, or a few arrows so you could try them before you bought a jig.   Pat

I have a jig. In fact I'm sitting here building arras right now. I have a left-wing helical clamp and a straight clamp.
 Just experimenting.

I shoot LH helical.

Buy a dozen, fletch three left, three right, and 3 at "0".  Find what works for you and "fix" the other ones.  Wings are cheap. Nobody is ever wrong if it works for them.  Finding what works for you is the fun part.  And hey, beyond the bow and shafts, it gets pretty cheap.  Not like the other side of archery....

fall away and biskets work good. It's the two prong fixed rest that can be an issue.

When you put a big ole broadhead on the end of your arrow, and it tries to take control……the drag and spin of the helical will keep it form doing so…

I believe when you are dealing with arrow speeds of 250 to 300fps(or more) things get a bit more critical. That is a whole other set of circumstances you are dealing with. The principles are basic but with the higher speeds, things get a bit more touchy.   Pat
