hog huntin question

do any of yall hog killers use any calls,if so ,what kind,when & how often.

seriously never heard of using calls.
however i have used a piglet i caught once. i made him squeal by softly pulling his leg. the mob came back and my mate got a sow out of the mob. cool trick.

I've calmed them down many times by imitating a feeding grunt with my mouth. I can't explain it, you just hafta hear it enough that you can duplicate it. Works best in heavy cover. I've had 'em walk right up to me.

I'm with biggie...that's what I've done. Works sometimes, doesn't others.

I've also squealed like a baby pig and had them run in too...but with different intentions than I planned. Not a good idea.

the reason im asking is,the other day i saw some calls at a sporting good store, a squealer call & a grunt call.its real thick swamp where i hunt & i was wondering if a call would maybe make the hogs stir a little,make em a little more visible so i can put the stalk on em.

I have a foxpro scorpion caller with several good hog sounds on it.I have turned it on and had hogs run right to me before.Most of the time they just get excited and run around looking for the other hogs but its hard to get a shot with a bow since they are moving. Still I don't really use it much for hunting hogs as I mainly hunt food sources,water/wallow holes and main hog trails.

I saw those calls too! the one's I saw were for feeding sounds.I almost got one but decided I didn't need it? I have shot hogs and when they started squealing from the hit the others started tearing up the brush like you wouldnt't believe! kind of made the hair on the back of your neck stand on end if ya know what I mean!Steel may be on to something,if you just called a small amount then waited for them to come look maybe they would calm down and you could get a shot????

Last fall, I got into a mess of pigs in a thick area of tall grass and briars.  I mean I was covered up with them.  The area was so thick that I couldn't see more than a few yards around me and one or two lanes that never seemed to have hogs in them.  Occassionally, one of the hogs would get nervous or upset and start making this heavy breathing sound like it was trying to get my scent.  I found that if I copied that sound they would calm down and go back to feeding.  

Since then, I have used that trick about four or five times with great success.  There, now I have gone and told you my secret.

I would second the little pig squeal comment, watch your back if you do and I would recommend doing it from a stand.  The only times a really worry about being charged is when they are wounded or when one of the little one's is squealin.

Any of you use sow in heat scent?

I too have found that a low quiet grunt is very noticeable and often has a calming effect on the hogs; but it never works if they smelled you-even a little bit.

I've used the grunt with good success.  I've only had it work on mature boars though, so seldom use it any more.  A buck grunt set at it's deepest note, and cupping your hand over the end is close to the same thing, and has worked just as well for me.  They will often come in like on a string.

If you're hunting with corn, carry some hard candy. The sound of the crunch when you bite down will bring them in if they think another pig is beating them to it.

I'm with Apex Predator.  I had a big mature boar pass about 50 yards in front of my stand last year.  He was headed out of sight, but I gave him a couple of grunts just using my mouth and he turned 90 degrees and came in to check things out.  It made me a believer.
