Strand count per bow poundage?
« on: March 18, 2009, 06:01:00 PM »
Is there a rule on how many strands per pound of bow weight that is needed for a B-50 string?

I have 4 bows that are all FF compatible but I’m learning on B-50…they weigh from 46 to 55 lbs at 29”.  I’m going to work with my Savannah to start with and then move to others…nothing against the Savannah but I have less money into that bow than the others plus it has been my work horse for the last two years so I’m familiar with it.

Also I’ve read a lot on the skinny strings and I’m not ready for that yet so is there a conversion for other FF material?  i.e. D97, 450+, TS-1 and others like 8125.  I have a 14 strand D97 for my Kota’s but could use less strands from what I’m told.  I’d like to stay over 10 strands for insurance…I’m not the most swift of foot so to speak.

Thanks,

Josh

For my dacron bows I use 14 strands up to 60#@28,you could go down to 12 strands B50 for the 46#.On my D97 bows 12 strands is strong enough for upto a 100# bow.I use 12 strand D97 on bows from 50# to 83#,it maybe alittle overkill for the 50# bow but it gives me the same nock fit for all my bows.I like to add 2 extra strands in the loop ends,It makes the loop ends a larger diameter and fills the string grooves better. And I feel it helps to make a quiter string by spreading the load out, just have always made my strings that way.I use .018 BCY No.62 serving for dacron.I like to use .024 Halo for 12 strands of D97,it gives me about .108-110 diameter and with 3D Super nocks,G-nocks and X-nocks with a .098 nock throat gives me a light snap but not to tight.

I use 15 strands of B50 on everything----well almost everything. On target and kids bows(35# and under) I use 12 strands and the same serving but use different arrow nocks so the fit is still good.
