I'm feeling the need for a relatively short recurve to supplement my Whip longbow and have kind of narrowed it down to these three because of availability and the grips. I have never had the opportunity to handle any of these bows so I value any comments immensely as I will be purchasing somewhat blind. Pics of your bows would be great!! Just got to say that Tradgang has become my favorite stompin' ground on the internet.

I have a mojostik and I really like it. Really fast, and smooth. I have never shoot a Thunderstick before so I really can't compare, but I really like my mojostik.

Which grip did you choose. I haven't been able to find a good descripton or pics of the normal, classic, or asbell grip options.

Another vote for the Whisperstik. I'll admit, I haven't tried the others, but JD makes a sweet bow, has a good eye for what goes together, and they ain't called "Whisperstik" for mothing. Quiet and fast. I have his normal grip. Looks a bit different at first, but it's comfortable, especially if you normally shoot a longbow.

I have an Arroyo and 2 Whisperstiks.  Both are great bows.  Both come from great people to deal with.  Both are quick and quiet, allthough the Whisperstik wins there, but not by much.  The grip on the Arroyo is more of a standard grip, similar to the older bear bows I have shot.  The grip on my 2 Whisperstiks are JD's normal grip, which is a little hard to describe.  The grip is sort of a bulb shape that locates well in your palm and, to me, would be best categorized as a low grip.  My Arroyo and Whisperstiks are all 56 inches and shoot fine with my 30 inch draw.  I shoot both equally, but the bow I use the most is the Whisperstik.

I have never heard a complaint about either.

Good luck whichever way you go.

So what is it about the whisperstik that makes it so quiet?

I had the Whisperstick and Arroyo and they are both excellant. The Arroyo has more mass weight in the riser if you want that as part of your criteria. If you want a  lighter more wand like feel the whisperstick has that. They are both really great shooting bows. Both bows are fast, quiet and stable in the hand. The risers are different obviously with the Arroyo being forward set. Some guys like that for pointability.

Thundersticks are super bows as well. His recurve is called a Ramhorn.I was not sure if you were interested in the Ramhorn recurve or the Mag which is the shorter hybrid style longbow. The 54 inch Ramhorn I had was a nice shooting short recurve.I never tried the 58 or 60 incher.

Thanks for the replies guys. Any more comments out there?
I'll be looking for something in the 50# range if anyone has one they feel the need to part with.

Never owned a whisperstick but shot one quite a bit. I did not like the grip and the one I shot was very quiet but no where near as quick as my Arroyo, both were about 54#s at my draw. My Arroyo is my go to bow. If ya get a 54" one make sure ya get the bamboo cores!! They do not make a 56" Arroyo only 54",58",60",62". I owned one thunderstick and they are very nice bows as well, but again the grip makes or breaks a bow for me and I could not get used to it. That said any bowyer should be able to get a grip ya like just ask. Shawn

I have been considering a couple of these bows also.  I am looking for a quick, light, quiet, and short hunting bow in either a LB or curve, and I would like a LB either on the short side or long if I can find a short curve I like.  So far the only thing I have really liked much in a short bow has been the Shrew.

This weekend while traveling around on a little three day get away with the wife I visited JD to check out his bows.  The Great Jashu stopped in at JD’s so I could shoot his 56” 50# mojo along with JD’s 56” 55#.  I shot the 60”, now infamous, demo mojo.  I also was able to shoot Mojo's (the trad ganger not the bow) Thunderstick mag; it was there to be refinished by JD.  Then I stopped in at Mojo's on the way south, and I shot his MOAB.  Too many bows and not enough time to really work with them all and enjoy them, but it was a great help in getting more familiar with these bows, and of course it was great to meet some other trad gangers.

The 56” bow was great, and as smooth a draw as anything I have shot so far.  I would never have known it was not 60 or 62”. JD’s bow has the standard grip with the palm swell.  I didn’t think I would like it, but was surprised that it fit my medium size hand decently.  It really stayed put solid in my hand, and it was very repeatable.  It was like it was glued into my palm.  After shooting it quite a bit it started to give me a bit of a pressure point in my palm, and I started to not care for it as well as Jashu’s grip.  His bow had less projection in the palm swell.  It was a good positive repeatable grip, but it spread the force out over my palm a little better for my hand size.

I shot the kajikastik in a 60” 60#@29 and liked that a lot more than I thought I would.  I was picturing a much larger riser.  I thought it would be heavier and bulkier.  It was very trim and light in the hand with just a little more weight than the mojo.  I hope to get a chance to shoot a 56” kajikastik before I decide what to get.  Even at almost 10# more than I currently shoot is was smooth and fun to shoot.  I liked the grip, and I think that grip is more like the classic grip, but I am not sure until I ask JD about that.

When I first picked up the Mag I thought I would love that bow.  The grip fit my hand very well.  I thought it was fast and hard hitting, but the arrows I was shooting didn’t care for the bow and shot very stiff.  I liked it, and I tried it several times.  However, for me the mojo was the clear winner in the short bow match up, and after switching around a few times I shot only the different mojo bows the rest of the time.  The Mag pulled smooth at my just short of 29 draw.  The bow just seemed to jump around in my hand.  I don’t know if my wrist was a little high, or I was torking it a little.  I just didn’t shoot right in my hand. There is a lot to like about the Mag so I will be shooting them more if I get a chance to see if I can improve my form with it.

I also had a chance to shoot Mojo’s MOAB.  Between the Mag and the MOAB the MOAB was the clear winner for me.  Even though both bows were about the same weight the MOAB actually felt a few pounds heavier to me for some reason.  I don’t know if it was a little off of want it was marked at or if it just has a different feel.  Despite a little heavier feel on the draw I loved the way it shot.  It was dead in my hand and with a lot of punch.  Despite some sloppy shooting when trying to feel the bow and how it reacted on the shot, as soon as I concentrated on just shooting it was dead on where I was looking.  It would not take long to get in the grove with that bow.

So far for me the 56” mojo looks like the short, light, quiet, and fast bow I have been looking to get, and a MOAB looks like what I want for a long, smooth, quiet longbow with a lot of heavy arrow punch.

Go to the whisperstik site and you can see the grips.  Click on bows and you will find a pic showing two standard grips between two classic grips.  The classic has more of a projection at the heal of your hand, and I think less palm swell.  Clicking on the 10% off stock bows text below that pic, and there is an asbell you can see.

I think I will end up with the standard grip with the palm swell taken down more like the classic.  If I was to get a Mag I would get the MOAB grip on it.

I own a 54" Arroyo.  It is the only one of the three bows mentioned that I have shot.  It is a great shooting bow.  It's very quiet, very quick and it shoots it where you are looking.  A great bow at a very reasonable price.
