Aluminum to carbon
« on: April 05, 2009, 09:20:00 AM »
I would like to try some carbon arrows off my 60" Big East recurve. Currently my set-up is a 27" Easton Legacy 1916 with 75gr heads up front. These fly like missles and are very quiet off my bow. Would like to get a little more speed with a carbon arrow due to my short 25" draw. I want to keep the noise down too! Any suggestions as to what carbon set-up that would work is much appreciated. Thanks........IJ

John,

The idea of carbon giving you more speed is being able to use a lighter arrow with the same spine. A lighter arrow tends to make a bow louder and does not penetrate as well. That probably won't be a problem on broadside shots at deer and on smaller animals, but lack of penetration can sure be a problem on larger animals, tougher animals like wild pigs, and shots on deer from angles that require the arrow to do more than go through ribs and lungs. I don't have a very good idea about shafts that work at shorter lengths, but some of the others here will know. You need to state the draw weight at 25" that your Big East pulls so someone will have an idea of how to spine the arrow.

Our new Predator II carbon's in the 20/40 may be just the ticket for you.  They're a .600 spine that is near identical in spine to your 1916's but lighter in weight.

I agree with braveheart...... i think 3555s would be way stiff unless you bow is cut past center and you are keeping them full length and front loaded....... i'd look at those predators 20/40s with 175-200 up front...... 28"-29" long....
