Mount Laguna/Cuyamaca area in the Cleveland National Forrest here in San Diego. You can camp on the mountain no problemo. Go to Julian for some apple pie.

Camp ground is called White Oaks on Paradise road.
Hwy 154 is the access, same hwy the Chamberlain ranch is off of, just more towards SB.
Public land on one side, private on the other.
Very pretty area, but tough playing in.
Be aware your in the PC capital, not everyone is pro hunting here. lol
PS If you go give me a shout

What part of California will you be in? This state is HUGE, you know...
PM me, if you're north of San Francisco I've got a few suggestions.

Thanks for all the feed back!
It will be myself and one other bowhunter. We were looking at pretty much the entire state, but closer the better. I'll give my partner a call and we'll see what sounds best. The place near Chamberlin ranch should be easy to get to.
and down by San diego sounds good too.
Were thinking about Ukia, but man that's a long ass drive.
