Question for you hog hunters.
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:11:00 AM »
Okay so I have never gone just for hogs. I know they dont see well but have a keen sense of smell. How is their hearing? I want to do some spot and stalk and have talk to some friends that work for the game and fish and found area of with a large population. So do I just keep moving with my face in the wind?
Any tips would be great.
thanks.

If they are in a sounder they won't hear you coming. They tend to make a lot of noise when they have company. A lone hog will hear you just fine, so be careful.

They also tend to calm down if you make like a pig yourself and thrash at the ground a bit with the occasional snort or two.

The ones I've stalked up on can here pretty good. But like said before if you put in some grunts they might calm down. The one thing that I have learned is they will every so often have there head down like they are feeding but will be looking for any movement at all. If you move you are busted. What i like to do is wait until their ear that is hanging down blocks there eye ( as they are broadside to you) then i move forward. Good luck, they are a blast to stalk.

I can show you a lot easier than I could explain typing.  :D    You might need a partner in case the hogs or snakes get you.

I treat them just like deer, just don't have to worry about them seeing you as bad.

Keep the wind in your face. When you get on pigs stay low,out of the Sun and try to get in front of them. If they are staying where they are at go to`m quick and quiet cause the wind may change.Shoot low and forward.I cover a lot of ground fast till I get on todays sign then I slow down and hunt.RC

Hunt into or crosswind and look under bushes & canopy during the heat of the day. They're noisy in groups or can slip into your back pocket if not. Fresh wallows are a likely ambush early or late. They'll charge if inclined. Don't know anyone ever hurt however. JMO, a quartering away shot is best to reach vitals.

Don't underestimate their sight! If they are pressured pigs, they will stop often and look around. But, if you have any cover between you and them, utilize it well, and you should be fine if you got the wind in your face.

Like RC says, it helps to cover ground as quick and quiet as you can. They dont usually stay put long, and when they pack up and move to another spot, they can cover some ground quick.

I try to take straight broadside shots. I don't fool with quartering shoot because I want 2 holes in my pig...one on each side. They don't bleed like other critters.

Anyone who tells you hogs have poor eyesight knows very little about hunting hogs.  I have had hogs pick me out while standing still in full camo including face mask while standing behind waist high palmetto brush and the wind in my favor.  That, is pretty darn good eyesight!

I believe pigs can pick up an outline in the open but staying low will help you a lot.RC

The 'can't see well' thing is based on rumor by guys who have never stalked hogs. Their eyesight is as good as yours or mine; and the ability to detect movement is just uncanny.
Hogs are obssessed with eating, and sometimes that other activity. If their eyes aren't visible you can stalk-the minute the head starts to come up freeze. The wind is always your biggest variable.
Hogs will tolerate a fair bit of intrusion but they will not tolerate your smell.

nothing better than coming across a lone submarine boar, ie- whole head submerged in a swamp.
when their head is under you can run in! when they come up for air you stand still. it's awesome.
they will pick up movement real easy! from what i can gather they are like a bear, fair eyes and ears but noses like bloodhounds. you have to fool at least two senses and smell is one of them.
