Turkeys are supposed to make noise!!
« on: April 17, 2009, 01:45:00 PM »
Ol Fatman and I got caught flat footed this morning turkey hunting  :knothead:

The turkeys were gobbling at my house when we left which was really early and then we get to my hot spot and not a gobble one.  :help:  Not all morning long!!

Two days ago there was gobbling coming from every direction and I saw 10 gobblers right by my blind yesterday morning.

Kevin and I were injoying the sunrise over the lake anyway and calling every once and awhile. You can't beat good conversation with another tradganger thats for sure. I decided to poor a cup of coffee and relax a little and just let it happen if it was going to.

Not long after I can see it in Kevin face just about the time he points out the far window on the right side. I look out and see a big ol gobbler standing there looking at the decoy at 12yds    Then a bunch of jakes walk into the picture too.

I'm holding a cup of coffee my diaphram call is sitting on the camera tripod, my slate call is on the ground and of course everything is in Kevin's way of getting a shot.

And we think those cartoons in hunting mags about the who puts down his rifle and heads to the outhouse...then sees the deer, are just cartoons!  I have yet to think of a way to counteract this well-known fact of hunting life!

Let's hope the elk are more vocal than your turkeys are when you come out   :D

Same happened to my brother and me just about two weeks ago.  Except the jake turned into the decoy  and the two Osceola Toms followed. We were so discombobulate in the blind bow wise it quickly turned into a non-traditional hunt cough cough choke choke. Sorry I can't share it here.

You'll get 'Em next time. Glad You got to get in the woods. I'm sure just sharing a blind with Kevin made it worth getting up early.

Same thing happened to me last Saturday, I had gobbling all morning and managed to call a couple Toms in to about 40 yards but they hung up, just stopped and looked for a long time.
Morning passed and it was a little after noon so I decided to relax, got off my seat and had a snack, well while I was resting my eyes three Toms decided to check out the decoys, I peeked out and I got birds at about 5-8 yards by the time I get up, get my bow and in position the birds are about 15-18 yards I shot thru the breast feathers on the lead bird, I didn't know Turkeys could jump that high.

Sounds like were not the only ones with silent birds  ;)

Big lesson here and I new better but I was to busy talking I guess. Always have a arrow out and ready even if the birds aren't making a sound.

Kevin probably could have shot if we were ready for them. It didn't help they came from behind us and never so much as made a scratch or snapped a twig.  :D  Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!!

That's right, Paul, that will NEVER happen again...  :readit:    :bigsmyl:

In Tracy's defense, he told me where they'd come in, where they'd go, etc.....we just kind of assumed we'd hear a cluck or a gobble

Thanks, Tracy!
