2018 shafts for Longbow
« on: April 21, 2009, 09:04:00 AM »
My first Longbow just came in the mail saturday. I have been reading about bare shaft tuning and am a little confused about which shaft to start with. My bow is 44@28", I draw to 30". I would like to use a 145gr Bear Razorhead. Would I be able to tune the 2018 shaft to this setup? How about a 2117?

Thanks
Ray

2018 may well work with your long draw. You may need to add some point weight but it may be close with the 145. I bet 2117 will be too stiff.

Thanks for the replies. If I were to get 2016's, is there any way to stiffen them up if they needed to be other than cutting the shaft shorter? How long is Full length?

Thanks
Ray

I am using 2018's cut to 30 inches and 200 grains up front for my sticks that pull 47 @28

Ray:
Depending on the kind of bow you have (depth of shelf will effect spine need) 2018's are too stiff if its less than center. A less than center bow 2016's are a good choice. If the bow is center cut 2018's should work. 2117's are way too stiff, they will spine 70#@30".

2016 should be fine with 125 to135 up front at your length.if you need to stiffen up without cuting drop back to a 100 grain point..

I would assume the zrrows will be cut to about 31 inches.I shoot 2018s and 2016s out of my bows that are about 50#s at 30 inches and arrows are cut to 31.Which one I use Depends on the specific bow and often whether its cut to center or not like Aromakr said.

With a high performance bow, a 145 grain broadhead,31 inch arrow and FF string  think a 2018s is gonna work well. You could use an even heavier head if they are spined a little stiff.

i personally like the 2018 for a hunting arrow. Its tougher and has a little more weight.Might be worth trying to tune that arrow to the bow playing with point weight.

The longbow I have is a Spirit from rmsgear.com. The shelf looks like it may be cut to just shy of center. I know if I nock an arrow and rest it on the shelf the field tip will appear to be about 1" to the left of center when the string is centered in the limbs. Thanks for the information.

I've got a Firefly, 44@28, that shoots 2018s just fine.

I use 2016's cut to 30.5 out of both my longbows and if the miss it's MY fault and I use 125 field points ,135 B. heads and they shoot great. My Hill is 40# @ 28 and my other is  45# @ 28 and I draw 29".

Last year I was shooting a similar set up. I bet you will work out to about 2018 31" with 175 gr up front. Every bow likes its own thing. Gotta play around a bit. Start long and work your way down. Once you get it, then cut the other arrows. Good luck.
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.
