Tic Toc Tic Toc...be back in a year or so..
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:45:00 PM »
Just got off the phone with Norm @ Blacktail bows and I'm about to send a little cash to get in line for a 62" 1 piece.

Macassar Ebony footed with Macassar Ebony and instead of his typical inlays solid Gabon Ebony or Bloodwood.(not sure yet) Cocobolo limb veneers footed with Massacre Ebony and Sheep horn tips.

Now the search for the perfect piece of Macassar begins seeing how he doesn't offer it.

Any leads on finding a nice piece of Macassar would be appreciated.

Good luck Mike. Macasser is very hard to find right now, especially a piece good enough and dry enough for use in a riser. Bob Morrison has stopped offering it cause he cannot get good quality. If it is not properly dryed it will check badly. Even if dryed properly checks can happen with it more so than other woods.

Try Crosscut hard woods in Portland Or. I was there not long ago and they had some I believe. If you find it there I would be happy to go down and take a pic as I am always looking for an excuse to go.

Mike -

There used to be a place called "The Woodshed" in Boise, ID.  The guy seemed to have access to everything.  Might try looking him up (if he's still in business)...

Yep same reason Norm doesn't offer it. He did tell me where he buys all his woods and I'll be moving within 20 miles of the place in 4 days so I'll get to pop in there and see what he has. The hard part on the net is getting folks to take pics of the wood you are buying. I'm not buying any sight unseen.

Thx for the leads folks. I'll check into them.

If you seen any like this with an open tan/dark pattern let me know please.
I don't have the size needed right now but I'll have it tomorrow.
Thx.

Mike, there is an importer in NC that carries all kind of exotic woods. Only bad thing I may not get to pick the piece you want, but he is a good guy and If you tell him what your looking for, I'm sure he will pick it out for you.  I'll get you a phone number when I get back in the shop. JOHN

Mike, That looks more like asian striped ebony to me. You might want to google south american exotic hardwoods. Good Luck  Greg

Mike, Just received my new Morrison and as Danny said Bob isn't offering Macassar anymore. Instead he's using Gaboon ebony. Boy is it pretty. A little darker than Macassar but pretty all the same.

Mike,
Get a hold of John Pyeatt AKA "leftyfred".  He is from Michigan and deals in exotic bow woods.  He always has beautiful wood.  Last few years he has had a booth set up at Compton Rendzvous.
