Second this year!!
« on: April 30, 2009, 02:28:00 PM »
Got to think this is my "dream season" for turkey....so please don't wake me.

First day of my second season in a different county.  Was thundering and lightening from about 2:00 to 4:00 this morning and quit but continued to rain hard.  Got set up in blind and heard nothing but rain.  About 6:10 saw my first turkey and a few minutes later 9 more came across the corn field.

They worked there way to me but stayed on the back side of blind. A few jakes came close but not to where i could shoot.  I think all 10 were jakes and hens.. saw no longbeards.  They kept walking to the north out of sight.

Had a short nap, called my wife and started to look around again for birds.  Nap made for renewed enthusiasim!!

Saw a hen step out of woods maybe 50 yards away.  Looked for something with a beard to be with her but saw none.  She worked her way to me and was walking in front of blind and I thought I would see what I could get away with her and was going to try and draw on her. Could see my tom decoy moving in wind a little and all of a sudden a longbeard steps out from behind my decoy at about 8 yards.

I shot and hit him right where I was looking.  I watched him run about 40 yards and he was dead.

Same short bow and arrow set up as first.  9 3/4" beard and 1 1/16" spurs.

    Lowell,  in Illinois still dreamin!!

Congratulations!

Great picture too! I like the angle you picked showing your setup and the trail in the mud from the bird’s last run. No repositioning of the bird just an honest picture of your hunt as it was…I also like pictures of overcast days.

Congrats, Lowell!! Sounds like a great bird and morning and looks like some fine fletching in that wing.  What counties are you hunting?   I hunted Morgan Co. Tues and Wed.  Got busted by 3 gobblers about 11 am Tues and passed on a bearded (maybe 1.5") hen on Wed.  Had her at 7 steps with her head behind a tree and she didn't have a clue.  That was good enuf for me.

Lowell,

I think my blind is exactly like yours (a doghouse). I noticed the large window is open in the pic... is that the way it was when you shot?

I've been setting up to shoot through the small one for fear of spooking the birds. Haven't had one close enough to spook or shoot at yet... but I have a good feeling about tomorrow morning.

Congrats!

Thanks all!!

Steve,  Will try a couple pics of the bow. It's an osage selfbow 53" ntn, rawhide backed that my wife did some artwork on,  44#@26"

Fletcher,  I live in and hunt Ogle and also hunt some land of my cousins in Stephenson... the next county north of me.  I think a bearded hen would be cool.  Missed one many years ago with gun!!

Fnshtr, That is the way I hunt and shoot from the blind.  All other sides are shut except for small cracks to look out of.  I used to try to keep it closed up more but that made it hard to shoot out of and open does not seem to spook turkeys. But still have to limit movement till right moment.  Best of luck in the morning!!

It is amazing to me that a blind like that - a bulbous mound in the middle of a field - does not scare them.  Funny things, these wild animals.

Yes, nice shooting - bow and camera.
