Beman Classic set up help
« on: May 05, 2009, 02:48:00 PM »
I have a 55@28 Horne Combo and I've decided to go with the Beman Classic arrow.  I'm looking for suggestions on how to set it up.  I'd like to be around the 600 gr finish weight or slightly more. What weight insert would you use and what broadhead/field point combo would you use.  I can't afford I really costly broadhead but I'd like the broadhead and field points to weigh the same for simplicity sake.  I'm looking for a single blade (single or double bevel will do) that is tough.  It seems like the Beman 400 spine would be the best but I imagine that will depend on how much weight I put up front.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

I shoot the 340s with 250 up front total arrow weights around 620grs 29.5" arrow..i use 100gr brass inserts with 145 feild tips or 75gr adpter with standard insert with 160 magnus with arrow wraps.. There alot ways to flop it around, my bows around 60#s at 29"s cut passed center.. 400s run alittle lighter than 340 per"

Yep, for what it's worth - MFXs 340's cut to 29.5" with 250grs for my 59# RER, and MFXs 400's cut to 29.5" with 250 for my 51# Shrew.

Oddly enough, the 400's with a 125gr tip fly great (and much faster!) out of the RER also.

My experience with the Beman MFX's has been a bit different, I have found them much, much stiffer than spine charts indicate. I am shooting Toelke Whips, 56# @ 29.5" draw, MFX 500's 31" throat of nock to back of point. I have ended up after much bareshafting (and amazement) with 175 gr.s of brass inserts and 145 gr. field points for 320 gr.s up front and 635-640 gr.s total, 23% f.o.c. and they fly beautifully!

A Beman MFX Classic 400 with 100 gr. brass insert and 175 gr. head will put you around 610-615 total weight, would be a good choice.

Jim,

That Tolke is not center cut right?  It would make sense you would need a weak arrow to bend around the riser.

500 is .500", 400 is .400", 340 is .340" and so on; those are all measured deflections--there is no interpretation there.

Back to the original question...I think you will end up using 400s with a 250g tip.  I draw 29 1/2 on numerous 55#@28" recurves and I use 340s at 30 1/4" whether they are Beman MFX Classics, Axis, or Full Metal Jackets; they are all the same...340

I'm not sure how they calculate it but its kind of odd to %50 of the arrows weight on the nose and only have %23 FOC.

Remember alot has to do with how far cut to center the bow is.. every bow is different, release, draw length, every thing matters...My Hornes  different than my Morrison both are different from my 21st century~s

It sounds like 400's with 250 up front ought to be about right.  With 100gr brass inserts and 145 field tips/broad heads that ought to be about right.  What single blade broadheads would you guys recommend for 145gr?  Thanks

I just got a bow refinished from Mark and got him to bare shaft for me... he says that his bows typically spine at 12-15# + the number on the side of the bow. so 55 + 12-15= 67-70# dynamic spine.
I have a horne combo hunter with 46@27 inches. It flies perfect with 61# dynamic spine arrow. So that should get you real close.

By that standard i would use a 340 spine at 29" with 250 up front.
This is what i got from Mr. Horne from several phone calls. As long as i understood him right

I came from nothing and I brought it with me.

Sounds like you are close. I shoot a 55# Widow PSA and my arrows are axis 400's cut 28 1/2 with 100gr brass inserts and 150gr broadhead. As for a 2 blade 150gr broadhead, I'd try Magnus Stingers, but there are alot of good ones out there.

Steve, the Whip is a center cut bow and extremely spine tolerant. I have shot as little as 235 gr. up front with weight tubes and more total weight and they fly well. My experiance with the 4oo's was fighting stiff spine. Other factors are at play here as well such as how  clean your release is, fletching etc. I stand by my thought that the MFX's  are much, much stiffer than the Beman charts indicate and I suspect this is true of other carbon shafting as well.

I have a couple of bows in the 53 to 56 pound range, Pronghorn, Big River, Griffin, all Longbows, and they shoot the Classic 400's cut 29.5" with 225 to 250gr up front like darts.
I either use a 100gr brass insert and 125gr heard or standard insert with a 160gr head on a long aluminum adapter.

55# @ 29" mild r/d 62" t/d mohawk longbow, 29-1/4" beman ics 500 (shaft + nock + 4" 4-fletch + 100gr brass insert = 335 grains), 125 grain steel adapter, 125 grain woodsman = 585 grain total and 29% foc.  come this june i hope one of these little bottle rockets will meet up with a hog ... and win!

My longbow likes 29.5" MFX 400's with 260gr. up front. 100gr. Steel adapters and 160gr. ACE 2 BLD. weight just over 600gr.

I use 250 gr. field points.
