mulies, elk in utah, unit 17
« on: May 06, 2009, 11:30:00 PM »
I have a guy who is inviting me to hunt mulie this fall in and around area 17 in utah.  I dont have all the info yet but was wanting to see if any of you guys have any info on this area.  Also the guy who invited me says "that to bow hunt elk out here you gotta be able to shoot 50yds".  He is a compound guy so go figure.  Just trying to get some info before I commit.  Thanks for any info.

Where is area 17? I hunted out west of saltlake last year(with my compound) They guy I went with had me practice at 60 daily. I ended up shooting a p&y mulie at 27 yards. So no you don't need to be good at long range, just good at closing the distance

I bought a general season tag for the Northern unit and plan to hunt the first week of general season.

Utah MD numbers are not great, but they have met M/O's in most of the state and exceed in the Northern unit, which is way, way better than Oregon.

If you have a guy that has offered to take you hunting in Utah, I would jump on it.

Some of the very best hunting is within a minutes of SLC. There are a lot of private properties that are in a landowner co-operative management plan with Utah fish and game. Hopefully, you will be accessing these areas. You should get on Utah's website and get started. Some of the hunt areas require special Bowhunter ed that you can do online.

Good luck.

Huh, that's the first time I've ever seen it in numbers. Which 17, looks like there are 4 sub units. You can take a 50 yard shot, but you can also get a lot closer too. If you are hunting above SLC for elk, good luck, the numbers aren't great. PM me if you want.
Good luck

Got to wonder also, I have never seen the Units,(areas) in Utah numbered, they have area specific names.  Also who ever told you that Management Objectives have been met and are above where they want them is either smokin' crack or livin in in Lala Land.  The Northern Region has the most public land of all the 5 regions in the state, it also has the lowest number of deer.
Buck to Doe ratios on the Wasatch Front may be good, and there are some good bucks there, but it is very chopped up with private non hunting areas.
As a resident, who hasn't hunted here for almost 10 years, I would save my money and go on a good whitetail hunt somewhere else.

^^^Units numbered^^^

The rep from badlands who invited my buddy, who then invited me gave a little more info.  He said that a couple of the areas we were gonna take a look at are, Mill creek and big cottonwood cayons.  I guess they are east of SLC.  We are thinking of heading out there around the end of sept, also the rep said that the tags are OTC.

I spoke to biologists from every part of the state. Maybe they are all on crack and Utah is LALA Land LOL.

I don't know. I do know it is better than Oregon. I have a Whitetail hunt scheduled for Novemeber as well.

It is just another experience. If I don't get huge opportunity, I won't be too upset. Anytime I can get in the woods and see some different country, I am happy.

Nevada next year and then I will be looking at Montana from there on. One of the Utah Bio's recomended I put in for a LE tag and if I don't get it, I should save my money and buy a Montana general tag. Oh well, the tag is purchased, so I will make the best of it.

Thanks for the input.

Paul

That is some steep area. There are some deer up there, but there are also a lot of people. If you are after elk, and you find some, head north and buy a lotto ticket asap! Don't mean to rain on your parade, it's just really tough hunting.
Good luck!

The rep said to skip the elk and just consentrate on mulies.  He also mentioned that after about three weeks the people kinda thin out a little.  He did mention something about up and down.  We are thinking about 7 to 10 days.

Last of Breed,

The crowds only thin out to a point.  These canyons are pounded with other recreationalists.  Hikers, bikers, picnic's, and backpackers.  Hunting pressure stays up until the season closes.  Certainly not like opening weekend.

OTC archery buck deer tags are likely to be sold out QUICKLY again this year.  I don't remember the actual day the permits go for sale.  Check UDWR's site.  I doubt they will last a week past the open sale date.

Be prepared to hike straight up.  Most of all have a great time.

William
