Vampire Deer?

Here are some pics of a skull I just finished. The deer has what appears to be canines in the front.  :eek:

Does that mean you hunt with wooden stakes?       That's pretty interesting.  You ever seen a picture of a Chinese water deer?  Those buggers have some serious fangs!

The buck in my AVATAR had them as well. My taxidermist friend says he sees 1 or 2 per 100 in our area.

Just regular teeth as far as I can tell. Shaped more like the front teeth in the bottom jaw rather than like true canines.

you live in Alabama. The answer is obvious- they are inbred. Probably married their first cousins or they're their own grandpas or sumtin'

I have a video of a young buck licking up a pool of blood from a bobcat that was shot the previous afternoon.
I guess we had better break out the wooden arrows.

I have seen that in three whitetail here in wyo. They were all older deer as well.

I have seen Llama skulls with these too.

The University of Michigan's 'Edwin SW George reserve' did necropsy(s) of deer shot to control the population there; and sometimes found birds in the deers rumen ( stomach).

 A friend and I witnessed deer slowly feeding to birds; and then jumping on them and taking them in their mouths and playing chase with them. In the end; they swallowed the birds.

Canine teeth show up whitetails occasionally.They are vistages from when ancient deer had canines.Of course elk and sikas have them as well as several species of deer in Asia,with more pronounced canines like the water deer above,muntjacs and others.that's a cool skull.

When I was stationed in Korea (Chong Ju) we had these things all over the place. I actually saw one with tusks twice as long as the one in this picture. I'm sure some come bigger...it really freaked me out to see one up close.
Too bad we couldn't hunt them, it wasn't real hard to get within bow range.

I killed a vampire deer in NC about three years ago.It was a 2 year old ten point with a burrlike third antler to the left of his left antler.I took it to a local taxidermist to have a skull mount done.He caught on to the teeth,i didn't know they existed.If he hadn't pointed them out i probly wouldn't have paid any attention to them.He wanted the head for his shop but i can't let go of this one.I know i'll never kill another one like this.I'll put up pics if i can figure out how.Oh, by the way you don't need wood arrows or stakes,my 30-06 worked well!!
