Tuning Question

I just got as set of 40# ACS-CX limbs from A&H yesterday.  I've tried several different shafts and several different strings as well as building the side plate out and adjusting the nock height.  So far, I have one combination shooting well, but it is a really light arrow and I'm not sure I'm going to like it.  Here is my question.  I had an arrow shooting pretty well with a 12 strand DF97 string, but the arrow was a little on the stiff side.  I decided to try a 6 strand DF97 string and see if the added speed would overcome the stiff condition.  I put the 6 strand string on and the arrows flew like darts, but impacted almost a foot left of where they hit with the 12 strand string.  What is up with that?  Do I need to reduce the sideplate thickness with the thin string?

Maybe Greg but a foot is a long way and with the skinny string of course they should have landed the other direction making the arrow weaker than the 12strand (I believe I remember you being right handed because I shot your ACS). Before you change the plate, have you run a couple of bareshafts through it with the fletched arrows? I'd be interested to hear where they impact in relation to each other. Sometimes an arrow either too weak or too stiff will ricochet off the riser and show opposite results from what they should.

Let me know what you find out further. If all else fails, we'll drag out that pile of mixed carbon shafts I have and tune it when you come up next weekend for our shoot (no pressure      ).

JC, that is what blew my mind.  I shot the arrows with the 12 strand string and they were kicking.  I didn't have a bare shaft but could tell (and knew) they were a little stiff, but they basically hit where I was looking although the arrow flight was not good.  So......I'm thinking put the 6 strand string on and it should help the stiff condition.  At 20 yards, the first group was about a foot left and the size of a tennis ball.  I shot 4 or 5 groups (4 arrows).  All impacted left about a foot, but appeared to fly like darts.  I know without bareshafting I can's make much of a call on what is happening, but it was not what I expected.

I sure hope I get to come to your place next weekend, but I'm not sure at this point.  I've got to go to Lafayette, LA on the 27th and not sure whether I will be back before the weekend.

Put lipstick (I mean coat it good) all around the belly edge of the sight window/shelf area and on the outside edge of the shelf. Shoot a couple and you'll get a clear indication if it's contacting...I'll bet it is. Usually, in my experience, shelf contact means an arrow that's too stiff.

Come on over Sunday if you can't make Saturday. We've got a bunch of folks staying over to shoot before we pull.

I think I had the nock point too low.  I've switched to 3 under and just can't make myself believe the nock has to be so high.  I've got it high now and it is shooting pretty well.  You may be right on the "too stiff" also.  I've got Entrada 600's flying like darts.  I wanted to get it tuned with 500's for a little heavier arrow.  These Entrada's are really light and my form is REALLY not what it needs to be for that setup.

Greg, just as a point of reference, I am shooting those same Entrada 600s out of a Quinn Comet that is ~40#@30" and they fly great(full length 100gr tips), but I had to adjust the plunger out pretty far to get them to bareshaft well. At the same time, I can shoot my Axis 500s at 31" with 125gr tips and they also bareshaft very nicely. If I remember, you have a 29" draw and as deeply as those ACS risers are cut, I would bet you could shoot the same Axis 500s as me and adjust the tip weight and get very good flight. I doubt you would need more than 125-150gr tips with standard inserts. That would also give you a finished weight of 425-450gr.

I also know what you mean about the nock point. Mine is around 1/2" to 5/8" high depending on the bow since switching to 3-under. It only looks funny for a while    then you get used to it. Good luck. I hope you get that thing shooting before the HH shoot(cause I wanta shoot it  :D  )

Foot spray works better and comes of easier, also your friends don't ask you why you have lipstick in your pocket when your at the range

Hey Dave, I think he means around the naval area on the belly!
I don't know about JC, I don't think lipstick would help his looks any !
