How do you stretch a glove?
« on: May 21, 2009, 01:57:00 PM »
I just bought a new glove and purposefully ordered a medium.  According to the sizeing chart, that is what I should wear and I have small fingers.  Most large size gloves the fingers are a little big anyway.

It's new and stiff, but the problem is that the fingers are a little small.  The index finger is great -- nice close fit that won't slip.  Ring finger is a little tight, but it shouldn't be a problem to break it in.  The fippin' finger is too tight -- can't get my finger all the way to the end.

What is the best way to stretch it a little so that it fits tight, but doesn't cut off the circulation?

I thought abour soaking it in water then wearing it until it dries, but didn't want to walk around all day wearing an archery glove.

Any body had this problem and have a solution?

Thanks for the help.

I'd still try to soaking and then wearing option, flex your hand while it's drying.  Then maybe put some leather conditioner on it after it's dried.

You could get it wet like you suggested and then get some large finishing nails and slip them in until they are tight, then push in a few more to stretch things out.  Let it dry and try it on for size.  Repeat if you need more room.  Baste the fingers with neatsfoot oil and it will soften up.

Simple. Put the glove on; and then let a rattlesnake bite you through the glove. Your fingers will swell: and expand the glove.

Try alcohol, it will evaporate quicker, then rub with neets foot oil.  Bill

After wetting the area, slip in a piece of dowling or wittle something of appropriate size to stick in the glove finger.  Lot less hassle than wearing a wet glove.  Good luck.

Every new glove I buy gets the 16 gauge treatment.

I stuff a 16 gauge shell all the way to the bottom of each finger and let it sit for a week or so. After it stretches, and as I wear it, it form fits to my fingers.

Works for me anyway.

Just soak it, then put it on and go out stump shooting shooting, by the time you get back to the house you'll have a custom fit. My glove had reinforceing pads on the fingertips that I cut off (I like to feel the string roll to my fingertips as I come to full draw) I then soaked the entire glove in water, put it on and shot it till it dried, now my glove is very comfortable and that helps with my confidence.

Good advice everyone.

Keith, I like your idea but I'm more of a twenty guage.  Might try that.

Got a good long weekend to get this taken care of.  I'll have time to get it done.

I always bought my gloves small on purpose.  I'd wipe it down, inside and out, with Montanna Pitch Blend (or Sno-Seal, etc.--some kind of leather treatment then use it.  Always worked for me.

Rubbing Alcohol works wonders. Pour some in and wear the glove until its dry.  Creates a real nice "custom fit" also works well on laether shoes and boots that are a little on the tight side.  :wavey:
