Howatt Bushmaster

Trying to get into traditional, I just bought a used Howatt Bushmaster, 64", 55# longbow.  I'm hoping to find someone who knows this bow.  I was told Martin took over this line.  Can anyone answer a few questions, or can you refer me to another source of information that might be helpful?
What replacement string should I order?  I'm assuming the length of string should be 60" for a 64" bow.
Can I shoot a Fastflight string or should it be Dacron?
I have braided some strings. If I tried to make one, would 14 strand be adequate for a Flemish twist?
Second questiion: What arows are recommended in aluminum and cedar?  I bought a couple of aluminum 2213's, but when bare shaft shooting, they stick with the nock angled to the left (125 gr. tips).  Do I need more spine?  If I choose to shoot cedar, what do you recommend?  11/32?  I draw 28", and the bow is marked 55# at 28".
Several have told me this is a good bow, and not having any other experience with traditional, I enjoy shhooting this bow; it is smooth and quiet.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have one. A string 3 inches shorter is where you need to start then twist up if you need too but my bow shoots best at 6 to 6 1/2 and is smoother and stacks less. Some of the newer ones can handle fastflight. I don't use it on mine but mine can shoot over 200 fps with a 2117 with a dacron string and a 28 inch draw so I don't bother. A 14 to 16 strand should be ok. The bushmaster shoots hard so you need more spine so try a 2117 or a 60/65 wood shaft to start. If you need more help let me know

The one I used to have shot well with 60-65 ceadars or 2216 31" long 125grs. I alos shot 60-75 carbons 31" 200 grs up front. The bow shot well. I have a 29" draw.

excellent choice!I have owned and sold a lot of different bows in the last ten years,but my bush master is my go to bow,it will not be leaving me. I would use a 14 strand dacron flemish string.MY bush master also likes a lower brace height,6 1/2" works well for me.I agree with the 2117,leave it a little long and trim accordingly as you bare shaft.

Encouraging words.  I had done some research and felt good about the Bushmaster, but you have confirmed my judgement.  I'll try the 2117's and bare shaft to see how they fly.  Thanks!

Gary, I would say yes you could use f.f. or D-97 on that bow, if your using 2117. And if dacron, 14 or even 12 strands should work. They are pretty good bows.

Those are nice bows. I used to have one and should have kept it.(though I can say that about a few dozen bows that have come and gone.) I'd certainly consider owning another. Have fun with it, and good shooting.

Check with Martin in Yakima on the Fastflite string or do a search. As I recall the first Bushmasters would not take Fastflite, the later ones were ok. The color of the tips is the clue. Mine has layers of gray glass which indicates the newer reinforced tips.
