Aluminum nocks?
« on: June 04, 2009, 12:32:00 PM »
Hello Gang,

It's been a while since I visited. Winter has finally released its grip on us so I ventured out yesterday to do a bit of roving with my bow. I ended up busting an arrow nock as I was letting a shot go, dropping my bow to the ground with the most horrible clatter. I was certain that I had busted a limb by the sound of it but it was just the arrow nock. Fortunately, no damage to the bow or the shooter.

Anyway, it occured to me: is there such as thing as an aluminum nock? Seems to me that aluminum would be tougher and just as lightweight as the nylon/plastic nocks.

cheers

Robert

Yes, G-5 makes or made an aluminum nock.  A bit on the pricey side.  I havn't seen them in awhile.

Thanks Badger,

Don't suppose you have a URL for these folks? I tried doing a google search and managed to find a firm that sells magnesium nocks which go for a whopping $18.00 a pop. I am tempted to drop them a note to ask how much they are without the diamond studding.

I'm surprised that Easton has not gotten into this game. Aluminum nocks make so much sense to me.

I just looked on there website. They are no longer listed.  That was the price of the G-5 Nocks there abouts.  They may have been made out of Mag.  I think they are called Meta nocks.

I have been reading "From the Den of the Old Bowhunter" by Chester Stevenson. Seems he used aluminum nocks, but I can't recall for sure ever seeing them.

Do a search for " META NOCKS " they are available from several places. They are around $18 for a dozen. some sites have them in 6 packs for $11. They are made in several diameters for most any carbon shaft.

I've got some old target arrows from the 30's some are self nocks, some are aluminum. I haven't seen any newer ones, but aluminum is at least twice as heavy as plastic

They were available in the 1960's but didn't go over too well.  As I recall they were much more expensive than plastic.  I don't see an issue with plastic nocks.  In five decades I've never had one break while hunting or field shooting.  Like any piece of equipment, you should always check them for cracks or breakage now and then.  I'm also quite sure someone can make them for you.
