Arrow setup for first longbow
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:48:00 PM »
I've been an enthusiastic reader of this site for over a year now and decided to become an active participant.

I picked up a my first longbow last fall, a used 64" Northern Mist Baraga, and have been shooting the arrows from my old compound.  While these arrows shoot OK, it's time to get heavier arrows that are matched to my bow and suitable for hunting.

My bow draws 51 lbs @ 28", and I draw it 29 1/2".  My planned setup is AD Tradlites or Carbon Express 150s cut to 31" with a 100g insert and 160g Zwickey Eskimos.  Is this a reasonable setup for this bow?

I've never made arrows before, so I'm going to order a half dozen complete arrows so that I can continue shooting and then begin to acquire the fletching jigs and other tools to build more arrows and maintain them.  My hope is that I can order arrows that will work well with my bow without too much tuning, and then learn to build my own arrows as time goes on.

When each of you got started in traditional archery, did you build your own arrows or shoot premade ones?

You did good with the NM Baraga.  It's a very good bow and will do whatever you ask of her, altho she will be much happier shooting wood instead of carbon.  70-74 spine, 31" with 160 gr heads.

Those Carbon Express arrows should be really close for you.

As much as I enjoy the idea of making and shooting my own wood arrows, I just hadn't given them any serious consideration.

Perhaps I should give Paul at Badger Arrow a call to discuss my options before placing an order.
