European mounts
« on: June 26, 2009, 05:05:00 PM »
I've got a couple of skulls (Goat & Springbok) I'd like euro-mounting.

A) Can anyone give me any tips for a D.I.Y. job

&

B) Can I see yours, please?

I have chemicals that I got from a taxidermist friend. Here is a pic of my buck from this past year.

After you skin, tape base of antlers and up antlers a little as not to lighten horns with boiling water. Boil skull(not too long)keep horns out of water as much as possible, just enough to get left over meat and brains off/out. Get skull clean of meat. Let dry. Go to "sally's", beauty supply store and get 40% peroxide solution $6. Use gloves and paint skull. set in sun for a day. Do not get peroxide on your skin or horns. After bleaching in sun. remove tape. touch up horns with stain if you wish. Barn wood is nice touch/cheap.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways-BOW in one hand-ARROWS in the other-Body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming-WOO HOO! WHAT A RIDE!

If you like to no it yourself.
1 After you is perfecty meat free.I skin and scrape off all I can next and if your in not to big of a hurry.Ill put it up on top of a building in the sun is better. After a few months scrape it again of just leave a while longer.
2 Next I scrape it again and sence my old lady is under standing soke it in hot dish soap of some kind.
3 Next day scrub it good with an old tooth brush.
Soak it again and scrub it again the next day.
4 Let dry in the sun if possable a day or two.
5 Then rap your skull good with ace bandage.
6 I go to any beauty salon and get proxide there is a lot stronger. But i've did lots of skulls with plain proxide. And just get a pan large enough to hold your skull. And just pour iy on a couple times a day for a few days.Let dry in the sun if you can.
7 Now I take fletching glue and go over all the seams wiping of each as I go.Drys clear.
8 Last after it drys good I varfane it good.It will last for ever.
I got got 97 buck skulls and over a 100 skulls other animals i've shot and picked up on hikes.
Lots are 35 plus years old.And they look the same except for a little dust.

Find a pan large enough to hold your skull. And start soaking it do it each time your it a chance.2,3,4,times a day for a few days.
Again after leaving it dry good in the sun helps I spray it down with varfane.
