I was wondering if anybody here might know about a big shoot around Barstow.
Anything at all about a BIG shoot I recently heard about; it may have taken place annually.
It may still be held....any thoughts?

Billy, I just checked the Ca. Trad Archers site and no mention of any trad shoots out there.I also checked out the state NFAA site and no shoots out that way. There was a trad shoot up in the mountains around Bishop(?) last weekend.
I do not think a club would hold a big shoot this time of year in Barstow, toooo hot. I know it was 90+ at our range here in the mountains of San Diego last Sunday. We shot and left by 1030 hrs.

60 up !!
Yeah, would be a bit warm right now.
This would've been a shoot that guys like Howard Hill attended...shoulda put that in the first post.
Would still like to learn a bit about a shoot that 'used to be'...
Thanks for checking.

Billy there's a big shoot this weekend at Big Bear, south of Barstow, it's not all Trad but it's a two day 60 target shoot in the Big Bear Mountains. Check out Cherry Valley Bowhunters, they put the shoot on.

Someone dig out the old Ye Sylvan Archer, and Archery Magazines from the 40's/50's. Barstow was an annual event with guys like Hugh Rich, George Brommers, B.G. Thompson, Roy Hoff, the Wilhelms, Howard Hill, etc. I'll keep diggin' Billy and see if I can find the articles.

George, thank you for the research. I like to hear about archery history. I aquired some "Archery" magazines from the late 60's that gave me hours of great reading. It is a kick to see that a lot of "new stuff" on the market is a rehash of a product that was for sale then.

Been living in Barstow now for 7 years - No annual Trad event that I am aware of... Especially this time of year... Average 105+ degrees...etc.
Man I wish there was one eariler or later in the year... I know there is a club by name of Majave Archer's near Phelen, CA. They have a web-site. Maybe check there.
Billy - are you in Barstow also ?

If my memory is correct, the shoot in Barstow is mentioned numerous times in Craig Ekin's book HOWARD HILL The Man and the Legend.

The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Nubbie Pate's Desert Shoot, sometimes referred to as "Tin-can Shoot," for his habit of creating targets of tin cans.
The most famous station was were you stood one-legged on a stump, strung your bow and shot the target, all within a time limit. Since Nubbie was one legged, it didn't slow him down.
Well known and well attended by Hill, the Wilhelms and other west coast types.
