Pick a spot

I shot some pics and video of this young bull moose in (not near but in) Homer, AK. We were about 40-50 yards from him.

 

Can you pick a spot? I see a light bit of hair just behind the right front leg. I would burn a hole in that and as soon as he stepped forward with that leg, my arrow would be on its way. Tom says this moose was born in his back yard! I know, this one is too young to shoot, but it's fun to try to visualize a shot anyway.

i have no clue about where the vitals are on a moose, but here would be my spot: in that little patch of light hair, on the right edge of it there is a little ridge of darker hair that veers into it. its on the right edge of that light spot so i figure its closer in to the vitals. that would be my spot. (of course that dosent mean that my arrow will hit there.)

You should; it's right at the start of the boardwalk through Beluga Slough. Sorry I missed you this trip. Even though the days were long, they just seemed to fly by. I'll be back!

I would shoot for 6 inches forward and 6 inches down from the lighter colored spot you are looking at with the leg in the posistion it is now.  If the front leg was forward I would split the difference.  It is neat the way you can see the shape and posistion of the shoulder blade under the hair!

I shot this cow moose two seasons ago here in NH. You can see where the arrow hit, a bit lower than the spot you are "looking" at. My arrow took out a chunck of the "knuckle" that covers the heart, centered the heart, made the lungs into jello and also took off a piece of rib going in. The moose took three steps and went down. Nothing does the job like a well placed razor sharp arrow.

Most guys tend to hit a little high. Here's my take on where I'd put the arrow.

Charlie is right, but,.... most people hunting moose WAY (for the first time especially) under estimate the yardage because moose a just a littl larger than they think. A touch high wouldn't hurt unless you are well aquinted with these animals.
Get close and shoot well!!
I've got a set of arrows sharpened up just for one of these come August 20. I drew a cow permit this year!!!! WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

I don't know anything about a moose but putting an arrow in the crease of the shoulder kills everything else.That dot is where I like to shoot everything.

Good luck, Tom. I hope you get your cow. I know how well you cook, so my mouth is watering at the thought of your version of moose steaks or roasts...mmm tasty! Then some sandwiches from the leftover roast...on fresh bread from the Two Sisters Bakery...with your secret barbeque sauce...darn, I'm drooling on my shirt

Charlie's yellow dot is too big.

There's a small flea about 1" from the dot at 2 o'clock...that would be my spot.    

Some of the best practice would be to paint a VW bus black and use it for a target.

I'd burn a hole in the center of Charlie's dot in the photo. A sleight miss high leaves access to the lungs.
