Arrow selection for newly acquired recurves
« on: August 04, 2009, 09:47:00 PM »
I just acquired two recurves

Bear Kodiak Hunter (Glass Powered)
AMO 60
50X# (Is this 51 pounds at a 28" draw??)
KT93182

Bear Bearcat (Glass Powered)
66"
35#
3CA376II

What arrows, aluminum and carbon would shoot well out of these bows.  Also, can I shoot of the riser shelf or should I buy a stick on rest.

Thanks for any help in advance!!

Yup, 51 or so at 28".
We will need your draw length for the arrow part.

There's a chart on the How-To section that can give you some info (a starting point).  Like Kille says, you'll have to adjust for draw length and how center shot the bow is, and how heavy your tips are, and even how long your arrows are if, for example, your draw length is short and your arrows are long.  What it comes down to is you need to look a chart to get a feel for what might work, then shoot a bunch of different arrows so see what really works.  Sounds like a pain, but it's not so bad.  It is shooting, after all!!  Oh, and you can shoot off the shelf or stick on a rest.  It's totally up to you.

I saw on 3 Rivers Archery where I can get a feather rest.  Could I combine one of these with a riser pad that goes on the vertical part of the sight window.  I am not sure exactly how the feather rest is shaped.  Does the arrow sit on the feather rest and lean agaisnt the riser.

I will get back to my original question.  My draw length is 28.5" on my compound.  What could I do to find out what it is with the Bear Kodiak Hunter.  That is the one I will use the most.  The Bearcat will help me work up to the Kodiak Hunter.  I will check the how to section to gain info.

I am willing to take suggestions on tip weight.  I would like to use the weight best for tuning and someday hunting.

Yep, the feather rest has the arrow on top up against the "strike plate" on the vertical part of the sight window.

Most people will say your draw length will be less than with a compound, and they are probably right. An inch or so.

I think most people use 125-145 gr. points.

Thanks Hot Hap,

I take it that there is some type of tuning process for a recurve that will help me determine what spine arrow I should use, for a 125 grain tip, and what lenght arrow is best.  I will probably use a 125 grain head unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Is there a good site, thread, or u-tube video to watch to help me learn this tuning process?

Missed the draw length question. You can put a spring clothes pin on a shaft and draw. The pin will slide down the shaft and you can measure it. Do it 3-4 times.

I think about a 2016 might work. Might need lighter.

Hot Hap

Thanks for the possible arrow size and great site to reference.  I read the whole thing and I now how to go about tuning a recurve.  At least I have a pretty good idea.  I am not green enough to think it will be easy.  I printed the site out for a reference.

It's a good thing to keep handy. Leave the arrows long to start. Hap
