String came off during release!
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:46:00 AM »
While shooting the other day,
the string came off the bow(a recurve) during the shot!
The string snapped forward and hit my bow hand (just a sting).I couldn't find any damage to the bow and the arrow went right where I was looking.

It is a new bow (to me), limbs are straight, new string, string was in the grooves before the shot. The only thing I can guess is the top loop is bigger than any I've seen and both ends of string are padded(?).
What could have caused that?  I've learned so much on this site I figured I'd ask the experts.Thanks.

I have had that happen on bows with a twisted limb. I woudl check them at draw and see if there is any twist. Another situation that could cause that is if it was to hot and the bow had been set in a bad position for any period of time that torqued the limb. It may have just been a small twist that went away after it was unstrung. Just the string loop being to big should not have caused that as long as it is not HUGE.

Have you shot the bow since then?

To large of an upper loop = problems for sure.I would try another string.bd

I did shoot the bow again for several shots with no problems.
I think I will order a new string.
Could all of the padding on the string have caused it, I've never had a string with all of that "stuff" on it before?
Thanks.

It could cause it yes. If the string is to big to fit all the way inside in the groves is greatly increases the chances of it coming out of the groove. This could be compounded by the loop being to big as well.

I used to shoot a very high performance curve.  When ordering the bowyer asked me about what type of limbs I wanted and how much experience I had shooting.  He said, whether it was true or not that he'd build me the hightest performace limbs he makes and that he would not build them for a novice, because "you could shoot off the string by torquing the riser."

AND guess what I did once!!!  Taught me a great lesson on speed shooting.

I wouldn't have bought that bow then 8^).

Actually, it's probably just the loops being too large.  If your limb isn't twisted, get another string that has a loop that just snugs against the limb sides when unstrung.  I only ever had that happen once in all my decades of shooting,  and I'm pretty sure it was because it was because the string wasn't seated after stringing.  Don't know for sure though.
