NOOB saying hello
«
on:
August 12, 2009, 05:07:00 AM »
My name is Will, and I wanted to drop in and say hello. I am both new to the site and to "traditional" hunting but not hunting. I am process of trying to find my first recurve, but I am college student and on limited budget. My two PSEs have served me well, but its almost to easy with a compound; I don't think I will give them up completely though. I am find this site very useful. there is a ton of experience here.
Do you guys have pointers for a noob? I am liking the Hoyt bows, but they are a little pricey.
Y'all take care
Will

Welcome to the site! Lots of advice here, just ask, someone can help you. If you're looking for a bow and are on a budget, scour the Classifieds, there are some good deals out there. Putting a WTB ad, with your specs and budget in there, may get you good results more quickly. Good luck!

Will, keep your eyes on the Trad bows for sell on here.. There are some really good deals... Don't worry about still using the compounds... I consider myself 100% traditional but still take an old black powder sidelock for a walk in the woods acouple times a year. Do what ever makes you happy...
But please stay away from Xbows. They'll stain your soul and you won't go to heaven..LOL
Glad to have ya aboard.

Welcome to the trad comminuty, & imo, the best trad site on the net. Here's some advice for you.
1- Since you're learning the biggest aspect of a bow you should be concerned with is length/draw weight, one that you can hold rock solid @ full draw for 2-3 seconds.
2- Focus on form & mastering the basics of consistent shooting form.
3- Mkae consistent accuracy your #1 goal, & never be satisfied.
4- quality practice is so much better than quantity. 1 arrow at a time.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I don't think i could be a purest haha. I love to rifle hunt too. Well I use a .444 marlin. MS laws classified that as primitive and i just find that funny.
As far as Xbows go, I don't really get them either. They don't shoot much faster than a compound, so I guess my soul is ok haha.
I will add a WTB add as soon as I can put some cash together. I have also been checking out some of the sponsor links. There seems to be a lot of makers out there.
Thanks again,
Will

Welcome!
As far as new bows go,I like Quinn and CheckMate. They are priced right and solid bows. Some of our sponsors also have new bows in that range.I just don't have any experience with them.
You can also pick up an older Bear,Pearson, etc for a great deal.I wouldn't spend much untill I had shot a lot of different bows and been shooting for some time.Even what you think you like in a bow will likely change as you get experience.
Asking someone what bow to get is useless.Everyone will tell you that the one they are shooting right now is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Atta boy Will! Welcome to the gang!
Like the others said, you'll find good deals and great folks here. If you want to get your feet wet right away, try taking the pins and peep off of that wheelie bow!
Buy the bow you can afford and learn to love her. I got one cheap for under $200 and it has its flaws, but I've learned to work with them and stuck with her. Now we're in love and I know where my arrows are going and how hard they hit. Practice until you're consistent. Oh, and don't skimp on the arrows - it's the one factor (tuning) that'll drive you nuts but once that arrow is tuned to that bow - watch out!

I went to the bow shop today, Bill's Archery in Pearl, MS. I wasn't sure if they carried trads, but it was worth a look any way because I needed to get my compound serviced and tuned. Well, really all they carried was mathews compounds. I haven't seen that many mathews bows in the place before...all could see was dollar signs. Man those things are expensive. Anyway, they pointed me in the direction of a local bow and arrow smith. The company is called Copper head bows. Since the guy lives about five minutes from me, I am going to run over to see him and check out is bows. Hopefully i will get to try a few out.

RH Clark has it right, the Quinns would make an easy transtion from a wheelie bow, great quality, fast, easy to tune and wont break the bank. Great folks on this site, you can learn a ton, I do all the time.
