I've noticed recently that when I shoot I'm getting a sharp pain in my bow elbow. It seems that it is due to bow shock because it doesn't hurt when drawing, only on release. Anyone have any advice about this? I shoot with a slightly bent arm and I cant at about a 45' angle most of the time. I shoot several different bows regularly so I don't think it's a particular bow causing it, however the heavier the draw wt. the greater the shock/pain. Has anyone ever tried the elastic sports support sleeves for this? Is there anything besides drugs that will help?

Tendonitis most likely. A quick search on WebMD or such will give you a good rundown of options.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Bursitis and/or Tendonitis, Pard.

Inflamation of the tendons in the elbow. I've had it for years.  When it gets bad I can feel the tendons "click" over the bone as I reach full draw.  Not much can be done for it.  I just take Tylenol when it gets bad.

I've tried sleeves. It helps with the pain but bunches up and interferes with my draw...

I had tennis elbow (archer's elbow) on the other elbow, drawing arm.  Actually caused by picking up a tool box repeatedly the same way.
Wore an elbow band with the air pocket in it, it works immediately.  I had to take it easy, for a week, then gradually get back into it.  It actually took a few months to go away completely.
Also, the doc told me to take an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofin, aleve) constantly for a couple of weeks whether it hurt or not, which helped in the healing.

By the way, that arm band I am talking about goes below the elbow in the thickest part of your forearm, and works by putting pressure in the right places and taking the strain off your injured tendons.
Does it hurt your elbow when you shake someone's hand also with that hand?

Got the same thing in my knees and they use to kill me, expecilly when walking down steps in the morning. Bud at work told me about the supliment Glucosamine with MSM and it greatly reduced the pain in my knees. Don't know if it will help your elbow but it's sure worth a try. I took the pill the night I bought it (cheap-300 pill bottle of the stuff sells for like $10 at Sam's club) and the very next morning my knees were much,much better. Stuff worked quick on me and I take it 2-3 times a day now. It's natural and you pass any your body doesn't use. Made a believer out of me...

I have the same problem, but it's on my drawing elbow. You can ice it, that will help, the sleeves didn't help me much, but the wraps that go around your upper forearm(below the elbow), will help. The best thing is a cortisone injection. But go to a specialist, my family Doc gave me one, and it only caused more pain! When I went to a specialist, he gave me the injection in a different spot and it helped alot! I got mine from shooting a stinking compound! Now there's no pain from shooting just from sleeping on it! Hope it gets better. Guss

I get it in both elbows at times. My drawing elbow is usually the worst. I found a site dealing with tendonitis and do the stretches they listed. It seems to help. I also cut back on the number of days I shoot and the number of shots per day until it heals up. Don't expect overnight results. The stretch goes like this:

Hold your arm out straight in front of you. Drop your hand down then pull it back toward your body using your other hand. Keep the arm straight and hold pressure for 12-20 seconds. I repeat this 2-3 times at least 3 times per day. I also take ibuprophen for the pain. Also avoid carrying heavy items with the affected arm until the pain has completely gone.

 I have both bad knees and bad elbows. Would wake up in the night with my elbows hurting. A friend told me about Glucosamine/Chondroitin and I began taking it. Took a few weeks for it to get into my system but now I no longer have elbow pain. I can tell it helps my knees also. It is not a drug but a supplement. I get mine at the GNC store. You can also get it at other places like Sam's and WalMart. Just make sure you get a quality product.
