Recovered points from Whitetail harvests over the last 15+ years. Rock Shooters: What style point do you prefer?

Jack, just starting knapping about a year ago. Still trying to get a couple of heads to use for this fall. I will probably use mohogany obsidian although I would like to get a rootbeer or two done good enough to hunt with. Your using some nice looking tips.

I prefer stone heads similar to the ones at 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock but would use any of them. Unfortunately some of them would be illegal here in NC; no barbed heads! Even the side notched heads are considered barbed here.

David (Bondo) My first taking with stone was with a side notch. Although I got the animal penetration was inhibited because of hair filling the notches. My favorite style is either a base notch or triangle point.

chipper, I know what you are talking about on the notches. I had the same prob. at first, I started to angle in the botttom side of my points just below the notches. That seemed to take care of the prob.

Here is a close up of a point I used on a whitetail a few years back. Notice how the bottom edge is slightly "tucked" under the notched.
This was my third stone point kill, and the first one I had made this way. It was a complete pass through, and it barely slowed down. It worked well for me at least.

David, I see what you mean. I have taken the approach of narrowing the ears to where they are past the sides of the point.
Are you coming to the Arkansas State Longbow Championship in September?

I use osage selfbows in the 55# range, I started out with them a lot heavier, but if you match your arrows up really well, 55# is more than enough to get the job done.
As far as arrow material goes, I have used river cane, Dogwood shoots, and regular ol' cedar shafts. This year I put together about two dozen bamboo arrows, of which about ten shoot really well out of the bow I'm planning on using this year.
Here are some of the points I am planning on straping on this year.

David, those are great looking! Looks like you got the knapping part Down! When you say bamboo arrows, not rivercane? I'm shooting rivercane shafts from Oklahoma this year and love how they shoot and the durability!

Frank, I shoot mainly Osage self-bows that range from 45 to 65 pounds and from 54 to 68 inches in length. Additionally I shoot "white man" laminated longbows and recurves but prefer the selfbow. Shaft materials include dogwood, rivercane, ramin wood and cedar. I make points from various cherts. My favorite is one made from raw Pedernales. It is very durable and sharpens well. Jack

Thanks Jack, osage and black locust selfbows here too! I've been shooting and building them for about 20 years. I see you like one of my favorite arrow woods, ramin.
For some reason, I've never got into knapping, and don't really know why! You guys ROCK...Good shootin, Steve
