Front Loading 2219
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:56:00 PM »
Does anyone have any ideas on how to front load 2219 xx 75's but still use screw in broadheads?

I was on line checking and was unable to find much

  http://www.3riversarchery.com/Broadheads+Points+Weight+Systems++Solid+Brass+Inserts+NEW+SIZES_c57_s228_p0_i0255X_product.html

here is the closest thing I found. But it only has inserts for 2315/2317 arrows.... Are these inserts close enough to work?

Thanks

D

I use the PDP weight system from Three Rivers.  Kind of a hassle till you get it dialed in, but it works.

Those dont offer enough weight though

If i use these.. Do i just screw in the insert then use a glueon broadhead?

Yep...I have some 2219s made up using 75gr steel adapter and 160gr grizzly. Unfortunately for me, the arrow is still a bit stiff so I dropped to 2216s. I like the toughness of the 2219 so I may play a bit with the heavier adapters when I get more time.

I used 100 gr steel adapters and 160 gr head.. maybe thats whats linked above,  but 3 rivers and others sell inserts you can screw weights in the base of,  but aluminum acts diffrent than carbon when severe front loading happens. This does make for a HEAVY arrow !!

How much weight are you trying to add?  With the PDP system you can add a whole lot of weight if you want.  I have 40 gr added in at the moment with my 2219's but I could add 150 or 200 if I wanted to.

Not sure what Dave Lay has experienced with severe front loading an aluminum (Dave - can you fill us in?) but I have gone up to 100 with no visible problems.

Good luck

I found the 200gr Ace broadhead with 125gr steel inserts. My problem is that Im shooting it out of a 58" 56# Bob Lee Takedown recurve @ 28".

 I wanted a heavier/stiffer arrow. I read alot of the Ashby report and read an article about G Fred Asbel where he stated he used 2219's on a black bear he shot out of a bow comperable to what im using. What i didnt account for is having to front load the arrow to get broadheads to fly well.

Has anyone tried the combo I m using?

I found an article on line where a guy frontloaded a carbon with this.

I pull the bullets from .22 ammo. They're 40 grains each, and can be bumped up in a vise to fit tightly in the shaft and then glued in place.

A 2219 is pretty heavy to start with, what kind of weight can you shoot from your bow?

You can get brass inserts that weigh 100 grs,steel adaptors that weigh 75,100 or 125 grs,glue on or screw in broadheads from very light to 300 grs or so.You can very quickly get any combination of numbers that add up to at least 425 grs.Often there is space in a broadhead ferrule,ahead of the adaptor and you can add a few lead shot in there.#6 lead shot weighs about 2 grs per pellet.

The plus to all this is,a brass insert and steel adaptor have much more strength than the aluminum ones that have a higher rate of failure.

Aluminum has tight tolerances.  2219 means 22/64" diameter, and .019 wall thickness, so you need the proper inserts.   What weight bow and length arrow are you using?  There may be other options like 2020 for a tough, heavy arrow without so much front load.

Thanks for all the info.... The main reason Im trying to get these arrows to work is;

1- They fly really well with the field points... tight groups...

2- I have 5doz xx75's that i got super cheap

3- I really want a heavy, tough arrow to shoot out of my 58" 56# Bob Lee Takedown recurve.

I think I found the right recipe  to soften the spine and have them shoot broadheads well.

200gr ACE Broadhead
125gr Adapter
5" parabolic Right wing

That will be a potent weapon.  Put some Hammers on the end of a few of those 2219's and you can shake a tree enough to knock the squirrels out 8^).

Maybe it was just me, but alumnium even if they are bare shafted, fly great etc. with that much weight up front they seem to break easier.  Alumnium just cant handle that weight and break right behind the insert on a indirect hit much more often.

I have used 32" 2219 with 100 gr steal adapters and 125 gr BH,(total arrow 732 gr) and also had trouble out of a 66# Bob Lee. I then focused on the bow and noted it wasn't cut passed center. Once I fixed that, my problem arrow flight improved. Mike
