to all you tuning experts..here's my ?
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:54:00 PM »
Hopefully you guys can help.
My setup- 56#@28 Great Plains Recurve, mfx 500's cut to 29" w/ 225gr total up front. I draw a true 28" and shoot 3-under. I notice a burnt smell a few shots everytime I practice. I also have black scuff marks on the front end of my wraps where it hits the side plate. My arrows seem to be flying great. I don't notice any wobble in flight and they stick in the target straight but obviously there is something going on. On a side note: I had this problem with two longbows around the same poundage and tried 400's and 500's and had the same issue. Any ideas?
Thanks

how far above the shelf is your nock set ? I have noticed a similar smell (shooting gold tip black finished carbon arrows)...Doug in Colorado...my nocking point on most of my bows is usually set at 1/2" above the shelf

I shoot 3 under with a similiar set up. Try moving the nock 3/4" and shoot.

spike buck,
I would not call myself an expert but i shoot 50# to 57# longbows and recurves.I shoot the same .500 29.5" with 225gr. up front out of my 50# longbow that is cut to center.Thoose same arrows will not shoot very good for me out of a 55# recurve cut past center.I would shoot that same arrow with no feathers and see if it cuts to the right. For me a .400 spine with that same tip weight would be a good start.

FAR from and expert, but I'd check my nock height.

I like for my bare shafts to impact a little nock high.

if i'm not mistaken, that great plains is centershot,or cut 3/16s past center.build your strike plate out about 3 times thicker than it is and see if that helps,ie,thicker leather, match stick or q-tip stick behind the strike plate.regards, robert      :campfire:    :coffee:
'TGMM FAMILY of THE BOW"at 211 degrees water is hot.at 212 it boils and cause's steam, which can run a locomotive.is it worth that one extra ounce of effort to finish first, the difference between good and great?
