Add a little weight to your glue-on BH
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:01:00 PM »
I've been wondering how to add a little weight to a glue-on BH without having to buy new ones, or they dont make that style in a heavier weght. I think I got it.

Get a field point or ( I used) a 175g blunt, the heavier points have a deeper hole and come to more of sa point, a new one works best as there is no glue in it. Drop 5 BB size split-shot sinkers (=32g) in it, hold over a torch for a minute or so and they will melt. Let cool for a couple minutes, a couple taps on a wood block, and out come a perfect 5 degree taper 32g weight that will fit in the nose of a BH ferrul and still leave room for a good length of taper.

Heat the BH till the existing glue is soft and push it down.

Cool!  I've heard of using lead shot or melted solder but never melting regular lead and popping it out to use in another head.  Good idea.

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

I have used shell shot melted into heads for years.  Works good.  Just remember to grain scale the shot first.
Now then, get your weapons ~ your quiver and bow ~ and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27.3

If you smoke the "mould" with candle smoke, it will release the lead "plug" easier. This works on sticky bullet moulds, so it may help with this too.

Great idea.

What kind of average weight gain do you attain with this?

R.W. - up to about 40g. 125g woodsman up to 160g. No problems getting the slug out, a couple taps and it falls out.

Westbrook,

Thanks for the tip. I will have to try this with some Zwickey's I have that are too light for my liking.

An extra 40 grains will make a heck of a difference.
