Which Broadhead Would Be More Appropriate For My Setups?
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:56:00 PM »
This fall I plan to use 3 particular bows for hunting. The reason for 3 bows is because my TD Recurve and Longbow are too tall for my blind so I bought a Kodiak Mag just for blind hunting. Anyhow you can see all 3 in my signature im using 2016s cut to 30" with 5 inch helical feathers im wondering for whitetail and turkey what would perform the best off my bows as far as penetration and flight? Magnus Buzzcuts or Snuffers?

I have some 100gr 2 blade BCs that shoot great off all my bow but ive been researching a lot on Snuffers and I like what ive been reading. Like any other hunter I like big holes and lots of blood but I also like consistent accuracy and penetration that I get from a 2 blade. What im hoping is to get the best of both worlds with Snuffers but I dont know anyone who personally shoots them. Could you guys share your opinions on both?

Nick, if you get properly tuned, the Snuffers will be just as accurate and consistent as a two-blade. You might find that you can't shoot the same arrow from all three bows, though. Just because they have the same draw weight doesn't mean that they will shoot the same arrow.

But you'll have to change your handle!   :)

:biglaugh:  Thats what I was thinking too.

If uping my point weight 25grs I know I will shoot lower and I can adjust to that but is there a chance it could affect my left and right?

Adding point weight will make your dynamic spine weaker, possibly as much as 5#.I doubt if you will notice a trajectory difference.

I have 3 different bows using the same arrow set up.This was done by changing the thickness of the side plate material.Thicker makes the arrow act stiffer, thinner makes it act weaker. You can also have a different point weight for one or two bows to get it done. You may or may not be able to get it done for your bows of similar weights.

It depends on how critical your setup is to start with. I haven't had to adjust from 125 to 160 on some of my bows, but I had to go up 5# for 190. Others were more sensitive.

I shoot the 160 gr Snuffers and the 125 2 blade Zwickey Esikmos. All from the same arrow, 2117 and from all 3 of my bows.

My bow weights are 53#..57# and 58# at 27" and my arrows are 28.5" to the end of the swag. Penetration and flight accuracy are no problem. I prefer to mount my Snuffers in a "Y" and my Zwickeys(and other 2 blade heads)Horizontally.

Same here my Buzzcuts shoot great off all 3 of my bows. I shot a 3 blade Muzzy 125 tonight and was hitting pretty well with it for not ever shooting it so I think if I go with the Snuffers they should fly.

Can I expect less power with a 3 blade? And can you use a regular sharpening stone with them or do you need a file type sharpener? Sharp right out of the box? And finally are they basically the same thing as a Woodsman? Ok im done now   :D

I have killed several deer with the WW and am trying out the snuffer 160's this year. I had great penetration with the woodsman even though at the time I shot light arrows. I was shooting similar speed to what you are getting. I have since gone up in weight and now shoot 70-75 pounds and much heavier arrows so I think I will get good penetration with the snuffers. Snuffers are a lot wider that the Wensel Woodsman. You will have to get more exact with your tuning when using a snuffer or woodsman than with the stinger. Two blades are less effected I think in wind than snuffers. You might like the WW alot too. And yes you will get significantly less penetration with a three blade but you should have enough for deer with you setup. I would use a file for sharpening. If you are worried about penetration with the snuffers the woodsman might be your answer. Don't overlook the stinger four blade, they fly just like the two blade stingers-perfect.

I have shot several deer, hogs, and Turkey with the big 160gr snuffer with a screw adaptor witch took it up to 212 gr. and have shot through most everything. I had the good fortune to meet Roger when he was still making the snuffer and he always shot a 4 fletched arrow as do I.  For sharpening I use a 8 to 12 inch mill bastard file and run along two edges at once.  From there I strop on leather, that seems to put an edge on that when I put the broadhead up to my arm hair 3 inches in front of the blade jumps off in fear!!  I have always liked a heavey head and believe that to be a factor in the penitration I have always gotten.  A friend of mine put one of the big snuffers completly through a 200lb buck shooting 47 pounds.

Thanks for the feedback. Im going to order a pack of the 125s today and see how they shoot. Could someone post a link to a sharpen that easy to use and does the job on the Snuffers?
