old bear stress crack repair?

Ive read alot of posts on fixing stress lines with locktite 420. I was wondering if it was necessary to take the finish off before you apply the locktite and if you had to sand it down after applying if you were not concerned about cosmetics. I have an old bear grizzly with typical stress lines right above the riser and I just wanted to lock them up. Thanks.

Nope and nope.

Clean yes, sanded, no.

Bowdoc is out a-huntin' and maybe Droptine too but I LT 420'd a crack and left it as is. Worked great.

A friendly WARNING on using LT-20, a repeat of theirs but since I obviously didn't pay enough attention, worth mentioning.

Loctite 420 is VERY thin. Handle it carefully. If it runs???? UGH!

I'll leave the sanding to them later. This stuff is HARD!

Should work fine.

like Steve says, don't sand prior to using 420...you need the bond area to be clean, and it's tough to get all the dust out of the cracks if you sand first...

I just filled some on my bow following directions on  this thread .  I used one blade of a small pair of scissors as a scraper to get the glue down to the finish and then some light sanding.  Clean the area and rub a little TruOil on the sanded area and you should be good to go.

Is it common for these stress lines near the riser to cause bow failure?

The problem with sanding first, is the crack fills with dust and when you use the LT, the crack will show "White" (Never can get it all out.)
Scrub the heck out of the crack with a stiff bristled toothbrush and alcohol. Set the bow so the crack is near level, and use a small hypodermic needle to apply the LT.
With our society the way it is, getting needles is getting to be a Bixxx, but you can get them if you try.

The reason they like the LT  420 is it is so viscus that it will flow into a very fine crack.. (I think they say .003"). Other companies make similar products, Raptor Archery use to have some that was about half price of the LT.
You will have trouble filling the cracks with other grades.

The problem with locktite 420 is that I can't find it locally and shipping costs are crazy. Anyone know were to get it that doesen't charge an arm and a leg to ship it to you?
