Who uses sights on their bows... hunting and other?
« on: September 01, 2009, 10:34:00 PM »
I hope this is ok to post in this forum. I'm not asking for shooting advice or information on them just wondering what king of company I'm in. I made the switch this year to a home made sight and have loved it. Post some pics if you can of your homemade designs, be curious to see them.

Did any of the old time greats shoot with a sight?

P.S. If this is in the wrong forum, go ahead and delete it... i posted it in the shooters forum but I don't think as many people spend anytime there.

It may not be popular here, but I used an aperature sight last year and may this year too. When it comes to hunting, hitting the spot is a must. I won't hold it against you. Plenty of TRAD archers have used them. Sights have been around longer than the compound.  :)

grew up with five pin sight on my 'curves. absolutely nothing wrong with it. in fact have a set that i may stick on my ILF 'curve. Lots of of "ol' time" shooters used sights.

If sights are what you need, then use them! I use the two on the front of my face however.

In the 60's and 70's before the compound, most folks around the East used them on their hunting bows.  A lot did elsewhere as well.  Here is Doug Kittredge, lower left,  with one on his bow in late 1950's.

Sights have been used for awhile here are a 1968 and a 1969 Temujin both with factory sights. And I'll bet that the people shooting in that time frame were hunting with them also.

Thanks for the information guys.
I now its not the most popular shooting style but I knew I wasn't alone.

Anyone make their own sights?

the whole reason I went traditional was the ability to make my own stuff. The only thing I have left to learn how to make is strings and bows. Well I guess I could learn how to make broadheads for big game too, but you get the point.

One more note; Larry Bamford, the first hunting editor for Bowhunter Magazine, used sight pins on his hunting bow.  Find yourself an old BH Mag from 1971 through mid 70's, and you will see his and others.  Larry shot a Phil Grable, metal riser bow, that had threaded holes drilled through the sight window for 8/32 sight pins.  Sights were very popular on recurve hunting bows in the 60's and 70's.

George,
I new Bamford (not well), as we were in a class together at the University of Iowa way back in 1959 or early 60's. He was friends with Denny Ballard who was a veteran bowhunter back then .Ballard is very active in P&Y even today.
I remember Bamford killing a bear in Co.(70's ?) using two arrows on the string at the same time. Ballard was with him filming.I still have that magazine with the story some where in my pile of old magazines

I also shot a Grable bow back in the late 60's or early 70's for a couple of years.

Here's a picture of the type of sight I use with my bow.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.   :D
