Base layers?
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:26:00 AM »
I was curious what you folks use as base layers. I want something I can use under my camo for deer and still use in my chest wadres for ducks. With money being tight right now I would like to find something I can use for both.....Roy

I would suggest some merino wool . It is good for a wide range of temperatures and has natural anti- bacterial to keep your oder down.

I get mine from First Lite Wool.

Sitka Gear's next-to-skin layers are really nice.  They have some kind of silver in the lining which does a great job at killing smell, plus they transport the moisture to the outside and keep your skin dry.  I shot a 3-D range four times over two days wearing the same top and it smells fine and I was comfortable.  They also make one that zips pretty far down the chest for extra venting when walking in a long ways or climbing.  I wear them as my main layer when hunting in the heat, and then wear them as my next-to-skin layer when layering other stuff on top as the weather dictates.

pretty good and fairly cheap = military surplus poly-pro or wool/poly

real good and not so cheap = merino wool (just got midweight smartwool today....had light smartwool last year under poly-pro and wool pants/jacket, worked great down to about 0. Heavier midweight for when it gets really cold/windy.
Bowhunting is "KILL and EAT" not "Catch and Release".....Semper Fi!
