I have recently moved to ottumwa iowa to help run my granfathers motel. I was wondering if there were any trad shooters in the area. I was also wondering if there was anyone that had any insight on the public land that surrounds lake rathbun. please feel free to PM me. thanks. Drake

Hi Drake!  I live in Mt Pleasant and am about 50 mile east of you.  There are a few trad shooters around your area.  Hopefully they will chime in, (bowmac where are you Bro!).  I have never hunted around Rathbun, but I do know that the fishing is good (crappie, walleye and catfish)!  Lacy and Shimek also have good public hunting and alot of ground.  There are also some inside city limit hunts in some cities, although you do need to take a class and proficiency test.  Some cities (like Fairfield I believe) have late season archery in the parks in town, otherwise it is private land only.  Wapello Chiefs is not a trad only club, but they do have a great trad shoot and some trad members.  ITBS has a good shoot in Ames Memorial weekend and it is an all trad event and always a great time.
  Where did you move from?

Weasle, I live just up the river in Eddyville. There is a good size public hunting spot just down river by Agency, 1 mile southeast of town and its about 1100 acres, some of it runs along the river. Its only about 4 miles east of Ottumwa. Now Rathbun has like 10,000 acres with lots of deer and good hunting. You can go to Iowa dnr home page and find public land to hunt in Iowa with topo maps and public land borders. Good luck and welcome to gods country for deer hunting. Chad

Ottumwa has an archery club. Find out about it and you will find some trad archers and information about about public hunting areas.
